1964... blijft helaas een vrijwel onbekend en onbemind jaar op Musicmeter. Maar met zowel British Invasion als surf op z'n hoogtepunt een van de leukste jaren qua singles. En dan heb ik de Beatles er niet eens ingeplaatst, dat blijft in 1964 toch een aparte categorie.

01 Gerry & the Pacemakers - Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying
Niet de grootste rock 'n'roll band, maar wel een van de leukste British Invasion bands. Voor 1964 is het kiezen tussen dit of 'Ferry Cross the Mersey'. Beide nummers zouden deze lijst kunnen aanvoeren, wat veel zegt over de kwaliteit van singles die Gerry & the Pacemakers toen uitbrachten

02 The Hondells - Little Honda
1964 was het jaar van de 'vocal' surf en de hot rod bands, met de surfperiode van the Beach Boys op z'n hoogtepunt. Dit nummer geschreven door Brian Wilson is wat mij betreft het beste hot rod-nummer. Het volledige album van the Hondells sluit trouwens prima bij dit nummer. Weinig platen die jeugd zo goed kunnen bevatten als deze. Ah, toen was alles nog zo onschuldig...

03 The Poets - Now We're Thru
Kortstondig de Schotse tegenhanger van de Beatles genoemd - met al even hysterische fans. De roem van The Poets duurde maar vrij kort, maar ze scoorden met een single in de hitparade van de UK. Een nummer dat nooit de overzeese charts haalde ondanks de British Invasion, maar wel een pareltje

04 Terry Stafford - Suspicion
Hee, een Elvis-wannabee die Elvis overtreft met dit nummer! Ja, zelfs Elvis kan hier met zijn eigen versie niet aan tippen.

05 Applejacks - Tell Me When
Een vriend van me meende hier ooit wel een heel erg vroege post-punk beat in de horen, maar dat gaat mij toch wat te ver. Lekker catchy nummer van een Britse band die vooral opviel door een vrouwelijke bassist.

06 Dixie Cups - Chapel of Love
Wat mij betreft het beste girl group-nummer uit de sixties.

07 Jan and Dean - Ride the Wild Surf
Jan and Dean is naast the Beach Boys de ultieme vocal surf band. Gelijk mijn favoriete nummer van hen, van de gelijknamige film.

08 The Rivieras - California Sun
Dit nummer piekte in de Amerikaanse charts toen de Beatlemania in volle gang was. Wellicht een van de laatste stuiptrekkingen van de surf/hot rod craze. Maar je zou bijna wensen dat die Britten nooit waren gekomen!

09 Millie Small - My Boy Lollipop
Een wereldhit met een ska-nummer in 1964. Da's netjes.

10 Dave Clark Five - Anyway You Want It
Verkies nummers als 'Glad all Over' en 'Bits and Pieces', maar die komen uit 1963, al werden pas een jaar later hits buiten het VK. 'Anyway You Want It' daarentegen is wel degelijk uit 1964. Een nummer dat aantoont dat de DC5 erg ondergewaardeerd blijft. Geen enkele band produceerde destijds zo'n wall of sound zoals op dit nummer - tot The Who in 1965.

11 The Searchers - Needles and Pins
British Invasion klassiekertje, maar the Searchers kunnen niet onbreken in wat hun topjaar was.

12 Bob Dylan - My Back Pages
Een van de vele Dylan nummers die in dit lijstje hadden kunnen staan.

13 Johnny Cash - Ballad of Ira Hayes
Kwam er eigenlijk pas net achter dat dit nummer uit 1964 stamt, maar vond dit altijd al een mooi sentimenteel nummer over hoe de inheemse bevolking gediscrimineerd wordt in de VS.

14 The Kinks - You Really Got Me
Het nummer dat de basis legde voor de hard rock mag natuurlijk niet ontbreken.

15 Buck Owens - My Heart Skips a Beat
Rechttoe-rechtaan country met een makkelijk in het gehoor liggend refrein en zeer herkenbare gitaarsound. Een van de country-grootheden uit de jaren '60.

16 Downliner's Sect - Little Egypt
Dit nummer bijna over het hoofd gezien, maar wat een lekker staaltje R&B blijft dit! A la Pretty Things, maar dan nog een stapje verder.

17 Rufus Thomas - Walking the Dog
Ik ben verre van een soul-kenner, ondanks dat ik het genre zeker interessant vind, maar dit is een funky!

18 Travis Wammack - Scratchy
Moeilijk te geloven dat dit alweer uit 1964 komt. Wammack is een vergeten gitarist, maar dit instrumentaal nummer maakt hem toch een pionier. Werd al snel opgepikt door grotere 60s instrumental bands zoals Davie Allan and the Arrows .

19 The Animals - Boom Boom
Hoewel het een grijsgedraaid nummer is, is 'House of the Rising Sun' wat mij betreft een van de allerbeste covers. Toch blijven The Animals een up-beat R&B band in hart en nieren, en dit nummer laat beter horen waar the Animals voor staan.

20 Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - Dancing in the Street
Een van de allerbekendste Motown nummers. Moet in deze lijst.
