Welkom bij de Regina Spektor Knock-Out! Wie zegt u? Regina Spektor, de vrouw die iedereen met een teer hartje - mannen en vrouwen - zal doen smelten, ontroeren of breken. Bekend van successingles als Us, Samson en Fidelity. Haar eerste jaren groeide ze als Joods meisje op in Moskou waar ze naar klassieke muziek luisterde. Dankzij de piano van haar grootmoeder en de ondersteuning van haar moeder, die muziekdocente was, was ze al vlug zeer behendig met de piano. Maar ook werd ze geïnspireerd door Russische bards en Westerse rockbands zoals The Beatles en Queen. In 1989, tijdens de Perestroika, verliet de familie Spektor het antisemitische Rusland. Via Oostenrijk en Italië - ze kozen hun landen wel lekker uit qua historie met joden - kwam ze terecht in The Bronx, New York. Ze floreerde in de anti-folkscene van East Vilage en na drie sterke albums begon haar carrière echt te lopen; Warner Brothers had haar gespot en gestrikt. Twee succesvolle albums en singles volgde. Na een wat teleurstellend zesde album leek haar carrière een beetje in een sleur te komen. In 2013 kwam er een teken van hoop; haar single You've Got Time werd namelijk genomineerd voor een Grammy (in de categorie "Best Song Written for Visual Media").

Met zo'n succesvolle carrière, miljoenen views op YouTube en zes albums zou je zeggen dat deze singer-songwriter populair genoeg is voor een dikke KO. Toch lijkt het op MusicMeter nog niet echt geweldig te lopen met haar populariteit. Misschien is het toch iets te "vrouwelijke" muziek. En iedereen weet dat deze site (en zeker het forum) behoorlijk masculien is.

Maar goed, ik ga het toch proberen. Het leek me iets te ambitieus om met 64 nummers te beginnen, maar 32 nummers zou het geweldige oeuvre geen recht doen. Dus koos ik voor de middenweg; 48 nummers gaan uitmaken wat het beste nummer van Regina Spektor is. De opzet is dat zestien nummers "geplaatst" zijn. Dat wil zeggen dat deze nummers vrijgeloot zijn voor Ronde 1. Welke nummer geplaatst zijn is door een onafhankelijke jury besloten op basis van populariteit op MusicMeter, YouTube en bij de fans. Hierover kan niet worden gecorrespondeerd. Deze nummers komen in Ronde 2 tegenover een winnend nummer van Ronde 1 te staan.

Een van haar beste nummer (ook wel een van haar vreemdste). Dat andere nummer is trouwens de B-kant van Reptilia. In die tijd was ze ook de openingsact van The Strokes. Het leidde haar grote doorbraak in.

Ben al een tijdje van plan de muziek van Regina wat beter te leren kennen, dus laat ik maar eens wat meeluisteren en stemmen. Al zat ik meer te hopen op een Joanna KO. Ondanks dat ik grote fan ben van The Strokes vind ik het eerste nummer nog leuker.
