een fraaie verzamelaar van het werk van grootmeester Martin Simpson uit de jaren 80. er staan 8 tracks op van het album "Grinning In Your Face" (1983), 6 tracks van "Sad or High Kicking" (1985) en 3 tracks van "True Dare or Promise" (1987 met Jessica Simpson). de muziek is een mix van country, folk, blues en zelfs bluegrass. een fijn album voor degenen die kennis willen maken met 's mans muziek. Martin Simpson is een snarenvirtuoos en speelt op deze collectie acoustic & electric guitar, lap steel, banjo, dobro. zijn latere albums o.a. "The Prodigal Son" en "Vagrant Stanzas" zijn wel consistenter en sla ik persoonlijk hoger aan. op die albums speelt de man op de top van zijn kunnen en komt alles samen. op 29/9/2023 staat de release gepland van het album "Nothing But Green Willow", waarop hij samenwerkt met de Amerikaanse singer/songwriter Thomm Jutz, met medewerking van Engelse/Ierse en Amerikaanse musici. dit album wordt nu al een "instant classic" genoemd. een album om naar uit te kijken.

Martin Simpson has said that the albums he recorded for Topic Records in the 80's were "kind of scrap books of the millions of things that I was into at that particular time". We should just be grateful that he can bring such inventiveness and personality to so many musical areas. Both a gifted interpreter of styles, and an original writer, Martin Simpson is undoubtedly one of the finest British acoustic and electric guitarists. He seems able to work convincingly and with originality in almost any field of music. His real affections are probably for the blues, however (he's a stunning slide player) and for "English" folk; he lists Robert Johnson, Bukka White, Doc Watson and Martin Carthy as inspirations for his resolutely individual approach.
His ability as accompanist - particularly in his successful pairing with June Tabor- also earned him high regard for his sensitive and versatile arrangements, and he has undeniably had a great effect on the musicians around him in the British Isles, who would probably bracket him with Martin Carthy and Richard Thompson as the major talents around.
And then at the end of the decade, he decided to take off to the East Coast of America on a permanent basis, so we can now look back at this period of his work, and evaluate it as being from a specific area.
They display a man with many and various guitars, in very creative union.
