Nanci Griffith - Clock Without Hands (2001)

na het magistrale "Other Voices, Other Rooms" haar 1e album op het Elektra label, werd dit het zesde en laatste album van wijlen Nanci Griffith op Elektra. 1 van haar "mindere" albums met minder sterk songmateriaal en een andere sound/productie dan haar vroege albums op de Philo en MCA labels. meer gepolijst en meer strijkers, maar nog net aan de goede kant van de streep. de titel van dit wisselvallige album werd ontleend aan het boek "Clock Without Hands" van Carson McMuller.

de songs/melodieën willen niet allemaal beklijven, maar wat blijft zijn haar prachtige stem en de indringende teksten, zoals in "Traveling Through This Part of You" dat zij schreef voor wijlen haar ex echtgenoot, collega singer/songwriter Eric Taylor (eveneens een Vietnam veteraan), over de lotgevallen van Vietnam veteranen, "Last Song for Mother" een eerbetoon aan haar moeder, en "Pearl's Eye View"(The Life of Dickey Chapelle) 1 van de hoogtepunten op dit album.

To the memory of Dickey Chapelle, a forgotten American heroine, who was the only American woman photojounalist to die in Vietnam. She stepped on a landmine in 1965 near the village of Chu Lai wearing her legendary pearl earrings and looking to be only a sleeping beauty when photographed by Henri Huett as she received last rights in the field. This was an irony of her life after having been the first journalist to blow the whistle in a 1962 article for National Geographic, that American troops were actually in combat in Vietnam, not just advising . Her last article for NG on Vietnam appeared after her death in 1966.

tracks 1,2,4,10 en 13 schreef Nanci Griffith zelf, waarvan 4) "Midnight in Missoula" en het verstilde 10) "Roses on the 4th of July" met alleen haar zang en een duet vocal met Michael Johnson, die op deze track tevens klassiek gitaar speelt, de hoogtepunten zijn.

track 3) is een nummer van Paul Carrack, tracks 5, 6 en 12 zijn nummers van de onvolprezen John Stewart, 7 en 11 co-written met James Hooker, een nummer van James Hooker, 9) co-written met Maura Kennedy en 14) de American classic "In the Wee Small Hours" een nummer van Bob Hilliard en David A. Mann.
van deze nummers steken de John Stewart nummers "Lost Him in the Sun" en "Armstrong" (over de 1e Amerikaan Neil Armstrong die op de maan wandelde) er boven uit. "the world all stopped to watch it, on that July afternoon, to watch a man named Armstrong, walk upon the moon, And I wonder if a long time ago, somewhere in the universe, they watched a man named Adam, walk upon the earth"
