"One Night" is een re-issue van het gelijknamige live album uit 1982 met opnames van een 2-tal concerten die Greg Brown gaf in Coffeehouse Extempore in Minneapolis op 8 en 9 oktober 1982. dat vinyl album werd een collector's item en is op deze re-issue uitgebreid met een 5-tal nummers "outtakes" (7,8,9,11 en 17) van dezelfde concerten "only excluded from the original release perhaps because of the time limitations of the vinyl LP format".
chronologisch valt dit album van de destijds 33-jarige Greg Brown tussen zijn 2e studio album "Iowa Waltz" (1981) en "In The Dark With You" (1985).
alle zelfgeschreven fraaie folk/blues liedjes gezongen met zijn destijds nog jong klinkende, zuivere stem die op zijn latere albums wat donkerder en gruiziger werd. de 2 intro's zijn gelukkig eenvoudig te skippen.
dit album bevat een aantal van zijn "early classics" zoals "Ella Mae" en "Dream On" en verder merendeels voor die tijd nieuwe songs. alle solo uitgevoerd waarop Greg Brown te horen valt op zang, akoestische gitaar en harmonica.

"The "Extemp" was one of the great institutions during the Dark Ages of Folk, that period between the 1960s Folk Scare and the 1980s resurgence of singer/songwriters and roots music, when good performing venues in America were few and far between. Many folk legends (now long gone) graced its stages and it was a nurturing environment for many of today's major artists then just beginning to make their way.
Among the latter was a tall, bearded and lanky young man who would periodically come up from Iowa City to share his stunningly original songs. Today, of course, we know Greg as one of the paramount singer/songwriters in America, but back then, an Extemp regular could recline in the warm and casual darkness of the old listening room and hear a song like "Canned Goods" or "Early" for the very first time. Magic. It was the only word for it. With the re-issue of this remarkable recording, you get to share in that magic, too.
