City Kids, American Boy & Girl, Bring Back the Love en Shoot the Moonlight Out followed in the footsteps of "Wild in the Streets". Jeffreys was keen to point out, however, that these American boys and girls weren't necessarily minority people. They're not just black or Puerto Rican or poor, they come from all walks of life so the themes he explored were universal". Other outstanding tracks on the album included the joyous, samba-flavoured "Matador" and the rather mysterious "If Mao Could See Me Now" of which even Jeffreys has mentioned he doesn't know what the song is about. je kunt dit album dus als een soort van concept plaat beschouwen. De boodschap van GJ aan Chino en Lori (American Boy & Girl) was "Please don't you let me down". een veelzeggend statement van deze geëngageerde artiest.
