Deze Crescent City Soul box is inmiddels een collector's item, waar je op Amazon flink voor in de buidel moet tasten. Hij is gemaakt voor het 1996 Jazz & Heritage Festival. Ik heb 'm zowaar kunnen pindakazen en dan begrijp je de hoge waarderingen goed. Dit is echt goed en soms bijzonder materiaal van zoals de subtitel zegt the Sound of New Orleans 1947-1974. De nadruk ligt op de periode tot half jaren '60. Vandaar ook mijn score van 'maar' 4,0*: ik heb een voorkeur voor de jaren '60 en '70. Maar toch: als je nou ooit R&B / Soul materiaal uit de jaren '50 uit New Orleans wil hebben, dan is dit wel de box.

De keuze van de songs is goed: meestal zijn ze aardig, soms echt goed. Ook staan er een aantal klassiekers tussen. Logischerwijs keren er een aantal artiesten steeds terug: Fats Domino, Irma Thomas, Earl King, Ernie K-Doe, Aaron Neville, Shirley & Lee en nog een paar anderen. Logisch, want zij hebben ook veel goed materiaal.
De eerste cd is een overzicht van 1947 tot 1974. Vervolgens hoor je de nummers chronoligisch vanaf cd 2 tot en met cd 4. Die laatste vind ik echt goed, op de eerste staan een paar fraaie klassiekers. Mooie box!
