As a musique concrete style steel guitarist and country music fan, I've known and admired BJ Cole's playing for decades. Getting to know him personally has been a plus, since he's a fund of information on wild genius steel guitar players like Speedy West, and wide open to just about everything in the world of sound, music and noise. A few years ago, BJ was in one of those moods when you just want to throw all the pieces up in the air and see what happens. He asked me to recommend a DJ or dance musician who might be interested in trying something different. I played him Plug, Squarepusher and Photek among other albums of the moment that seemed loose and strange enough to accomodate an country/ambient/jazz /rock/western swing/classical/experimental pedal steel virtuoso.

BJ was particularly taken by Luke Vibert's Plug album. He looked him up, they gelled, they fizzed, they exploded. I can't think of a time since maybe the early 1970s when such a collaboration could have worked so beautifully. This peculiar hybrid of lounge, exotica, swing, jazz and chilled out dance beats is in the air, emanating from France, Japan, Austria, America, the UK and just about everywhere else. What is slightly different in the case of Luke and BJ is the way they adapt so easily to each other's musical methods. Many people assume these methods must be antagonistic - divided by deep generational conflicts about musical ''realness'', technology, fashion and the kind of things you're supposed to be doing when you hit certain birthdays.

This album proves the opposite. I feel thrilled that I was the catalist, because almost everything I like is on here: swinging big beats, melancholy hony tonk romanticism, Hawaiian music, R&B, strange harmonies, psychedelic Indian music and elbow-on-the-keyboard organ, hiphop, cinematic drama, Latin rhythms, Yma Sumac style vocals, electricity, acid, moody piano loops, scorching fuzz lines, sliding strings, indefinable noise and slamming big band brass. It makes me laugh for being brazenly cheesy but at the same time it's so in-the-pocket, as musicians used to say, so inventive, so uncontrived and so up that i play it over and over.

B.J. Cole was de pedal-steel gitarist van Cochise, een band die begin jaren 70 country-rock maakte in de stijl van Matthews Southern Confort & Bronco. Hij speelde in die jaren als gastmuzikant op een wagonlading LPs van andere bands en artiesten mee en is o.a. te horen op Humble Pie ( III ).

Het geluid van Vibert is goed terug te horen op dit album
