I’ve always found Dying Fetus a very interesting band when I wasn’t into death metal at all. Sure when I was still 15 I could only smile about them and how stupid of a genre death metal was. They were in fact in of the first metal bands I had ever heard with their song “Kill your mother, rape your dog” and my head was still full of all the clichés surrounding this genre. Dying Fetus of fully fitted into that picture their apparent gore-lyrics and their (for me at the time) ridiculous instrumentation and vocals. However, the song was catchy and when reading the lyrics some time later I found out they actually had a good message which I sort of agreed with to a certain level.
Now 4 years later I have myself become a death-metalhead and I now of course fully understand how great death metal could be. I was always interested in the weirder and more avant-garde forms of death metal with bands like Kayo Dot and Meshuggah but when I rechecked Dying Fetus I did enjoy them a lot more than I used to when I was little 15 year old.
Now this album is the only one I checked out so I can’t compare with the others but I must say it’s certainly very solid. The drumming is mostly fast on double bass and mostly groovy as are the riffs although I must say they can get very technical sometimes. But what Dying Fetus is mostly about for me is their lyrics, which are interesting to say the least. I don’t really find them that well written because they are mostly too direct like they are just written down in anger but their world-vision is very sceptical and very well thought out I think. They are anti-religious for example, but no Satan-worshippers or anything near it, and they do bring good arguments to the table why they are against it. From what I’ve read in the lyrics these guys aren’t exactly masters of poetry and perhaps they aren’t the brightest ones but the do fit this style of music and I like them.
The entire album is music wise mostly about groove and is mostly in the same pace. They don’t slow down and things can get monotone in this way since it’s mostly low mid-paced and somewhat fast riffs that do sound alike. But hell, it’s a good album too bang you’re head on.
