Pallas - The Dreams of Men (2005)

Zojuist er voor het eerst naar geluisterd en voor de Pallas-mailinglist Eyes In The Net (waar ook de hele band driftig mee doet) het volgende op papier gezet:

Picked up the new album at my favourite musicshop today and have just finished listening to the album for the first time so here it goes....

1. Packaging
Wow, Mike B has done a terrific job. The booklet really adds another dimension to the album with beautiful images that complement the songs lyrics. As a small lad I used to be drawn to album through their fantasy art (Roger Dean et all) but over the years I found out that my favourite artwork is mostly photographic. The style reminds me a lot of what Hugh Syme has done over the years (is their a book on Hugh Syme just like the one on Thorgerson's artwork for Pink Floyd?).
BTW, the picture with The Last Angel.. is it possible that I have seen that before? From my memorybanks I pull out the word: perfume add. Does that make any sense?

2. The Music
Boy, there is a lot going on on this album. What I like so far is that there doesn't seem to be a single track that I don't like. It covers the whole range of music that Pallas has done through the years: from the epic to the hard-rocking-and-rolling, from the almost classical overtones to symphonic bliss.

What I also really really like is the way the album is paced. When I put the cd in my player I noticed it was over 70 minutes long. I am not a big fan of long albums and I prefer albums to be between 50 - 60 minutes. But.. both the pacing and the running order of TDOM is very well done. The placing of Northern Star after the first 5 songs and before the big finale Mr. Wolfe - Invincible - Last Angel was really well chosen.
I really hope we get to hear more of this side of Niall's playing (it's an instrumental with acoustic guitar and keyboards) in the future because it is simply drop-dead gorgeous.

I wouldn't have thought that production wise Pallas could improve upon The Cross And The Crucible but they surely have done. The scope of the album is huge with the atmospheric bits being even more atmospheric then on TCATC and when it rocks it is almost foundation shattering. Cool! On TCATC it sometimes seems that Allan's voice was drowning in the overall mix but that is something that has been corrected on TDOM.

Overall everyone seems to have delivered some of their finest playing ever with a big thumbs up to Colin. BTW, the drumsound is also a lot nicer on TDOM. Especially some of the quieter drumparts sound really nice.

3. The Lyrics
Yes, I even had time to dig into these already. There is some thoughtprovoking stuff on this one. TDOM seems to be a real 'child of our time' and falls in line with a lot of Pallas' co-progrockers recent output like IQ's Dark Matter, Pendragon's Believe (partly) or Echolyn's The End Is Beautiful. We are living in troubled times and that is what is being reflected on these albums and also on TDOM. But..... what has happened to the message of hope that shone through songs like Atlantis & Ark Of Infinity, Fragments Of The Sun and Celebration??? Does it really have to be this bleak? Are we forsaken? I loved the music in The Last Angel but the image of such an angel roaming this earth feeling all is lost and having no hope of ever getting 'home' wasn't something I was prepared for and made me feel really sad. A feeling I had never ever expected to get from a Pallas album, so that's going to need some time to really sink in. BTW, does anyone have a translation of the Italian bit at the end?

So, is it Pallas' best album ever? Their track-record is very good (IMHO, they really haven't made an album that's a stinker but they do have the odd song that isn't up to par) and so my expectations where high. Usually that sets me up for some kind of dissappointment but Pallas once again have delivered the goods. Ask me again in a few years wether it has popped up at the top of the list

Pallas weet hoe een neo-symfo plaat moet klinken, dat bewijzen ze hier!! De schotten komen niet vaak met een album, maar deze was het wachten zeker waard!!

Pallas Ik had er nog nooit van gehoord. Tot dat ik het bovenstaand bericht van Flipper las. Ik heb "The dreams of men" maar eens gedownload en ik moet U zeggen dat ik zeer aangenaam verrast was. Eindelijk weer eens een symfonische rockplaat waar je je vingers bij kunt aflikken, of beter gezegd een plaat die je oren strelen. Ik moet toch maar eens wat meer naar Flipper gaan luisteren .

Pilletje nodig Hans

Doet me deugd dat je dit album hebt ondekt. Luister ook een naar 'The cross and the crucible'. Ietwat beter dan deze.

Dit is het beste Pallas album dat ik ooit gehoord heb. Neo prog op z'n best. The Last Angel is wat mij betreft een van de mooiste nummers die ik OOIT gehoord heb. De "operatic vocals" aan het eind zijn onvergetelijk mooi...Engeltjes kunnen niet mooier zingen. Puur kippe(n)vel muziek... Ook het openingsnummer, The Bringer of Dreams is onvergetelijk mooi..wat een album, jammer dat niet meer mensen neo prog appricieren...

Het is lang geleden dat ik deze heb gedraaid, toch maar weer eens uit de kast halen binnenkort want Pallas is toch wel een van mijn favo-bands.

Maar (zie mijn eerdere lange post) ik blijf bij mijn opmerkingen omtrent The Last Angel: ik vind zo''n nummer qua tekst helemaal niet bij ze passen.

Gezien het feit dat zanger Alan Reed op dit moment, als nieuwsredacteur bij de BBC, een behoorlijk onzekere toekomst tegemoet ziet, ben ik bang dat het in de toekomst er niet fleuriger qua teksten zal worden.

Weer een pareltje van de mannen van Pallas....vooral de laatste 2 nummers zijn geweldig!! 4*

Niet slecht.

Vet gitaargeludi en idem drumwerk.

Ik kan me alleen in de zang niet echt helemaal vinden.
Beetje iel, had rauwer gemogen, ivm de heftige instrumentatie en rockerige songwriting.

Lang niet meer geluisterd, maar nu weer even in de speler gestopt. Mijn hemel! wat is Ghostdancers verschrikkelijk mooi, op het moment dat de bridge wordt ingezet lopen de rillingen me over de rug (let dan even op de tweede stem van Graeme Murray, die je even kort hoort. Hemels!).

Het album is m.i. net niet zo goed als zijn voorganger welke ik echt hoog heb zitten (mede door wat mooie herinneringen) en welke ik tekstueel ook beter vindt. Desondanks is dit Neo Prog van het allerhoogste niveau.

Wat mij betreft het beste album van Pallas. Het heeft alleen wel even geduurd voor ik tot dat inzicht kwam.

Mooi album en heb de luxe uitvoering met 13 bonusnummers.
Dit is nu de derde die ik in korte tijd heb aangeschaft.
Dit is een plaat die je blindelings kan aanschaffen als prog fan,

Lekker stevige Neoprog plaat.

Net als Pendragon zoekt Pallas de stevige kant van de neoprog op.

En dat werkt wonderwel!

Overigens doet de zang me denken aan die van Everon.
