Gram Parsons - Another Side of This Life (2000)

een album met "home recordings" van de destijds 19/20 jarige Gram Parsons. deze opnames werden gemaakt met een Sony 500 taperecorder, die een vriend van de familie Parsons uit Tokyo had meegenomen "It was one of the best toys a teenage boy ever had".

feitelijk een akoestisch folk album met alleen Gram Parsons op akoestische gitaar en zang. 5 door hem zelf geschreven nummers (2,5,6,15 en 16), waarvan met name "Wheel of Fortune" en "Brass Buttons" reeds getuigen van zijn niet geringe songwriter's talent, hoewel een nummer als "Zah's Blues" dat in mindere mate doet.

alle overige nummers zijn covers, waaronder o.a. 2 van Fred Neil "Another Side of This Life" en "That's the Bag I'm In", "Codine" van Buffy Sainte Marie, "Reputation" (Tim Hardin), "The Last Thing on My Mind" (Tom Paxton), "They Still Go Down" (Dick Weissman) en "Searchin" (Leiber/Stoller) plus een enkele traditional "Willie Jean" en het veel gecoverde "Candy Man" van Reverend Gary Davis.

de geluidskwaliteit van deze opnames valt reuze mee, maar de uitvoeringen van de liedjes willen niet echt beklijven. geen essentiële uitgave, maar wellicht interessant voor de "die-hard" Gram Parsons liefhebber.

mocht dit album in 2024 zijn uitgebracht door een debuterende singer/songwriter, dan was het vermoedelijk in de massa van gelijksoortige releases onopgemerkt gebleven. in die zin zijn dit sympathieke stijloefeningen, een voorbode van zijn talent dat zich nog moest ontwikkelen. "the rest is history".

"For those whon don't know, Gram was influenced by such artists as Fred Neil, Buck Owens, Dan Rich, Albert King, George Jones, Gene Pitney, Van Dyke Parks and even the country pop star Jim Stafford. Truth is, Stafford, was the one who encouraged Gram to play country music.

Our first taping session was in March of 1965 when Gram was home from New York on a visit. By that time his Harvard career was being supplanted by the lure of the folk music scene of Greenwich Village. He was dropping names like Fred Neil, Dick Weissman and Bob Dylan, and was busy making a name for himself playing the old Night Owl Cafe on West 3rd. He was an urban folkie and damn good at it. Several of the tunes on this CD, obviously of their era, to my knowledge, are the only surviving recordings of his foray into the Village folk music scene.

Subsequent tunes here document his exploration and love of R&B ("Searchin" and "Candy Man"), and others provide a glimpse of the incipient stages of his landmark group The International Submarine Band, which many credit as being the archetypal country-rock group"
