Skara Brae - Skara Brae (1971)

Ierse folk van de bovenste plank. een klassieker in het genre. het originele album en enige album van de folkgroep Ska Brae uit 1971 kreeg een heruitgave op cd in 2013 label Gael Linn. album werd destijds verguisd vanwege te gewaagde arrangementen, maar kreeg later de erkenning die het verdiende en wordt nu alom als een baanbrekend album beschouwd. vandaar de heruitgave 50 jaar later. de originele groep bestond uit de zussen Maighread en Triona en broer Micheal Ni Dhomhnaill, die opgroeiden in Rannafast (Donegal Gaeltacht), het laatste is een benaming voor regio's in Ierland waar Iers de hoofdtaal is en verhuisden later naar Kells (County Meath). het 4e lid was Daithi Sproule afkomstig uit Derry. het album werd in 1970 in 1 middag opgenomen en in 1971 uitgebracht. het zijn alle traditionals gearrangeerd door Ska Brae. de instrumenten zijn 2 gitaren, keyboards en 4 stemmen. niet meer dan dat. de productie klinkt wat gedateerd, maar de harmoniezang en de melodieën op dit album zijn wonderschoon. de groep kwam 26 jaar later in 1997 bijeen voor een succesvol reünie optreden in Dunlewey (County Donegal). MIcheal O Domhnaill overleed in 2006. een leuk feitje is, dat de groepsleden nog zeer jong waren ten tijde van de opname van dit album, Triona 16, Maighread 15, Micheal 19 en Daithi 20.

Despite the move to County Meath, the family had a central place in the rich musical and poetic tradition of Rannafast, and the children grew up in an atmosphere of intense self-awareness of their role as bearers and transmitters of that tradition.

A range of elements came together in this synthesis, the Donegal song tradition, the music of Dublin-based folkgroups like the Johnstons, Emmet Spiceland and Sweeney's Men, as well as the international music of the time. The construction of Beatles' songs paid off in a new kind of understanding of harmony, chord structure and bass lines, an understanding then put into use in the setting of traditional songs. Pentangle and Joni Mitchell were also important influences, and the music of Pentangle's two guitarists - Bert Jansch & John Renbourn, left an indelible mark on the playing of Daithi and Micheal. From Jansch and Renbourn came the use of open tunings on the guitar, open D especially, a novelty at the time, but now established as virtually standard in Irish music"
