De krenten uit de pop: The Jam - Fire & Skill: The Jam Live - dekrentenuitdepop.blogspot.nl

The Jam zette tussen 1977 en 1982 het Verenigd Koninkrijk volledig op zijn kop.

In Nederland moesten we echter niet zo heel veel hebben van de band, waardoor ook ik de platen van The Jam in eerste instantie volledig heb gemist.

Die schade heb ik later gelukkig in kunnen halen met een serie bijzonder fraaie reissues, waardoor ik de band inmiddels wel op de juiste waarde kan schatten.

De band, die ik inmiddels schaar onder de beste Britse bands aller tijden, nog eens live zien gaat normaal gesproken niet meer lukken, maar dankzij de vorige week verschenen box-set Fire & Skill heb ik inmiddels toch een aardig beeld van de podiumprestaties van de band rond Paul Weller.

Fire & Skill bestaat uit maar liefst 6 cd’s en bevat bijna zesenhalf uur muziek. Dat lijkt wat overdreven, zeker voor een ieder die al wat live-werk van de band in huis heeft, maar ik vind het persoonlijk een mooi en ook waardevol document.

De 6 cd’s in het boxje bevatten allemaal één live-set en iedere set stamt uit een ander jaar van de 6 jaar durende carrière van The Jam. Fire & Skill laat hierdoor goed horen hoe The Jam zich gedurende deze carrière heeft ontwikkeld. Van de rauwe en flink door punk geïnspireerde band die kleine zaaltjes op zijn kop zette, tot de gelouterde band die de Wembley Arena vijf avonden achter elkaar plat speelde.

Veel songs komen meerdere keren terug en in vrijwel alle gevallen zijn de versies zeer verschillend. Na de periode waarin punk domineerde, eerde The Jam nadrukkelijk de grote helden uit de jaren 60 (The Beatles, The Who, maar vooral The Kinks), terwijl de band in haar nadagen nadrukkelijk flirtte met de muziek van Motown. In al deze periodes klonk de band opvallend energiek en gedreven.

Natuurlijk ga ik dit live-document niet zo vaak uit de kast halen als de tot klassiekers uitgegroeide studioplaten, maar zo op zijn tijd klinkt deze portie pure energie en gedrevenheid bijzonder lekker. Erwin Zijleman
