Iris DeMent - The Way I Should (1996)

Wie zich niet al teveel aantrekt van het label Country (en het meestal daar bij behorende vooroordeel) kon bij dit album wel eens voor verrassingen komen te staan. aangename verrassingen dat wel. Op het hele album neemt Iris stelling tegen politiek gekonkel, oorlog, sexueel misbruik, geloof (Iris komt uit een diep gelovig gezin) en nog een paar van die zaken die je in het leven kunnen verontrusten.
Bijzonder indrukwekkend in het nummer There's a Wall in Washington vooral vanwege de tekst:
There's a wall in Washington
and it's made of cold black granite
They say 60,000 names are etched there in it
in that wall in Washington

A father, he traveled from far away
to walk the path 'til he finds that name
He reaches his hand up and traces each letter
The tears they fall as his memories gather
for the boy who filled his heart with pride

Sterk is ook haar stellingname in Wasteland of the Free waarbij Iris de partij van de minstbedeelden in Amerika kiest:

We got politicians running races on corporate cash
Now don't tell me they don't turn around and kiss them peoples' ass
You may call me old-fashioned
but that don't fit my picture of a true democracy
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

of zoals het iets verder op klinkt:

Living in the wasteland of the free

Sounds like some kind of Hitler remedy

Dat zijn nogal uitspraken voor een countryzangeres, in Amerika! Duidelijk iemand die weet wat ze wil en ook niet van plan is haar mond te houden.

De muziek loopt uiteen van traditionele country tot stevige rhythm & blues. (dat laatste in de afsluiter van het album)
Laat u aangenaam verrassen.

Wat een fijne plaat is dit! Ik kwam er achter dat dit de enige CD van Iris DeMent was die ik niet had. Ik dacht altijd dat dit een slechte plaat was of zo, maar niets is minder waar. Sterker nog, ik vind dit misschien wel een van de betere. Mooie songs en sterke teksten. Ik ben benieuwd wat Iris DeMent nu eigenlijk van Trump en vrienden vindt. Ik heb wel een vermoeden..

Anyway: ik kan iedereen aanbevelen om deze eens te luisteren, als je van americana / country / folk houdt.

papat thanks! Ken de zangeres niet maar zie aan de sterretjes van haar albums dat het kwaliteit is. Ga haar muziek ontdekken , vooral omdat ik sinds de serie Yellowstone wat meer in de country ben gedoken.

het derde album van de geëngageerde, maatschappij kritische Iris Dement met 11 zelf gepende liedjes, waarvan zij er 3 samen met anderen schreef, o.a. "This Kind of Happy" met country legende Merle Haggard.

zij deinst er niet voor terug om gevoelige onderwerpen aan te snijden, zoals sociale ongelijkheid op het venijnige "There's a Wall in Washington" dat zeker in het huidige tijdbestek in Amerika van toepassing is of het schaamteloos eerlijke "Letter to Mom".

fraaie piano ballads als "When My Mornin Comes Around", "This Kind of Happy" en "Walkin Home" worden afgewisseld met iets meer up-tempo liedjes als het sterke titelnummer "The Way I Should" met een gastbijdrage op gitaar van Mark Knopfler, "Keep Me God" en de onvervalste r&b/blues rock van het stuwende "Trouble" een duet met Delbert McClinton en stevig gitaarwerk van blues rock icoon Lonnie Mack.

de meer traditionele country van "I'll Take My Sorrow Straight" en "Letter to Mom" wordt muzikaal omlijst met o.a. fraaie fiddle (Tammy Rogers) en pedal steel (Paul Franklin) klanken. ook Chuck Leavell (piano, organ) ex Allman Brothers Band leverde een prominente bijdrage.

wederom een sterk album van Iris Dement dat slechts in 4 dagen tijd werd opgenomen. wellicht een fractie minder dan de net iets betere voorganger "My Life".
