Faye Wong is undoubtedly the most enigmatic pop star to have ever existed, and I say that in every good way possible. Her success in China is tantamount to that of, say, Madonna to the West, where Faye Wong was (and remains) otherwise unknown. There is something that Faye Wong possesses however that no other pop idol of her recognition has ever been able to, and that is the ability to completely abandon all senses of commercialism in her music, not even a scintilla remaining, and Fúzào is the very embodiment of that. In this album, Faye finally closes her arms in her embrace with dream pop, and hugs it quite tightly as well. No mainstream artist of her calibre has ever released something so daring, and of course it was a commercial failure in comparison to the rest of her discography, but there is no wonder why it is a cult hit with her fanbase today, why it's her personal favourite album and also why it is her most popular in the West. At times the album is sugary - almost saccharine - and in others it is mellow and subtle, but consistently dreamy.
Wiki
Faye Wong (born Xia Lin on 8 August 1969) is a Hong Kong singer-songwriter and actress, often referred as the "
Diva of Asia". Early in her career she briefly used the
stage name Shirley Wong. Born in
Beijing, she moved to
British Hong Kong in 1987 and came to public attention in the early 1990s by singing in
Cantonese, often combining
alternative music with mainstream
Chinese pop.
[1] Since 1994 she has recorded mostly in her native
Mandarin. In 2000 she was recognised by
Guinness World Records as the
Best Selling Canto-Pop Female.
[2] Following her second marriage in 2005 she withdrew from the limelight, but returned to the stage in 2010.
[3][4]
Popular in Mainland
China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, she has also gained a large following in Japan. In the West she is perhaps best known for starring in
Wong Kar-wai's films
Chungking Express and
2046.
[1][5] While she has collaborated with international artists such as
Cocteau Twins, Wong recorded only a few songs in English, including "
Eyes on Me"—the
theme song of the video game
Final Fantasy VIII. Wong is known to be a "diva with few words" in public, and has gained a reputation for her
"cool" personality.
[6][7] In
Encyclopedia of Contemporary Chinese Culture, Jeroen de Kloet characterised her as "singer, actress, mother, celebrity, royalty, sex symbol and diva all at the same time".
[8] Wong is considered by some as one of East Asia's biggest popstars
[9] with a career of over 30 years.
