Niet persé. Zijn op bijv. Rufus Thomas na ook wat andere artiesten. Het is vooral wat funky-er.

Wel geinig, overigens, bij deze boxset staat op Allmusic bij alle nummers van The Mad Lads "Madlib" als uitvoerende artiest in plaats van The Mad Lads.

Deze boxset is de opvolger van het fantastische eerste deel die een periode van 10 jaar besloeg en 244 singles bevatte, met een overall erg hoog kwaliteitsniveau. Ook dit Volume 2 bevat 9 CD's, maar dan over een periode van een kleine 4 jaar (1968-1971) met 216 singles. De nummers werden gemiddeld dus langer. Het belangrijkste: het hoge niveau van het eerste volume wordt grotendeels vastgehouden, ook dit mag er weer wezen zeg. Ook bij deze boxset weer een fraai uitgebreid boekwerk met een prachtig overzicht van alle singles en vele pagina's toelichting met fraaie foto's.

Vanaf 1968 belandt Stax / Volt in het post-Atlantic tijdperk en brengt het flink meer singles uit. Want hierna is er ook nog een Volume 3 voor de periode 1972-1975. Voor dit Volume 2 blijft gelden dat voor een Stax / Volt single de compositie of 'hitgevoelig' en/of erg goed moest zijn. Vaak gaat dat samen natuurlijk.
Er bleef sprake van een Stax sound, natuurlijk door de ritmesectie van het label, maar ook door een aantal vaste producers en schrijvers. Ook door de ligging in het zuiden van the USA: dit is veelal Southern Soul. En nog steeds door een aantal belangrijke artiesten met hun herkenbare geluid. Helaas dus niet meer met Otis Redding, maar op dit Volume 2 staan dan wel weer de beste singles van Isaac Hayes, die ook als producer niet bepaald onbelangrijk was.

Een andere belangrijke instrumentale band zijn Booker T & the MG's, die ook op heel veel werk van andere artiesten spelen van het label als begeleidingsband, net als de Bar-Keys. Maar daarnaast hadden zij ook zelf heel wat hits. Veel van hun beste singles staan op dit Volume 2. Trouwens, de afwisseling van vocale en soms instrumentale hits zorgt voor een prettige afwisseling op deze lange box. Ook de tijdloosheid van die muziek - ook van the Bar-Kays - valt op.

Iets anders wat prettig blijft, zijn de bijzondere 'gems' die hierop staan. Artiesten en/of nummers waar ik nog nooit of nauwelijks van had gehoord. Er staan flink wat mooie tot fantastische van die onbekende pareltjes op deze box.
Een artiest die veel langs komt en veel echt goed werk aflevert is William Bell. Persoonlijke favorieten die vanaf dit Volume 2 te horen zijn, zijn The Soul Children & Little Milton. Daarnaast vind je op deze box natuurlijk heel veel werk van sterren als Isaac Hayes, Rufus en Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd en blueszanger Albert King. En hierop zijn nu ook The Staple Singers te horen.

Er staat maar weinig op wat ik minder vind, eigenlijk verbazingwekkend met zoveel nummer. Maar als je ook maar een beetje van Soul houdt dan is deze box The Complete Stax-Volt Soul Singles Volume 2 1968-1971 de moeite meer dan waard. Het is een prachtig, vaak tijdloos en erg goed, historisch muzikaal document.
