John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers - Stories (2002)

Niets nieuws onder de zon. Professionele bluesrockplaat, maar wel enigszins gelikt en veilig. Ik vind Padlock on the Blues een stuk beter.

The Mists Of Time, de afsluiter van dit album, is zeker 1 vd mooiste blues nrs.

op de 1 of andere manier ervaar ik veel van zijn albums uit de 90's en ook deze uit 2002 beter als zijn 70's albums. (wijlen) John Mayall was inmiddels 69 jaar oud toen hij "Stories" opnam.

op dit album staan 6 John Mayall "originals", een 2-tal nummers (10 en 12 niet de sterkste van dit album) van zijn bandleden plus een aantal covers. hij laat de lead gitaar partijen op de meeste nummers over aan gitarist Buddy Whittington, die tevens op slide gitaar excelleert op "Feels Just Like Home".

"Southside Story" (Fontaine Brown) is een pittige blues rock opener met een lekker schurende harmonica partij, dat gevolgd wordt door het sterke "Dirty Water" (Buddy & Julie Miller) een nummer waarop net als op zijn liefdevolle eerbetoon "Oh, Leadbelly" aan Huddie Ledbetter aka Leadbelly de folkblues niet ver weg is. (Oh, Leadbelly I heard your guitar ring, So long ago when I was thirteen, And you stirred my soul every time I heard you sing").

"Demons In the Night", "Pride and Faith" & "I Wished I Had" zijn meer op R&B gebaseerde nummers, gedragen door piano en Hammond orgel, waar "The Witching Hour" (Maggie Mayall/Tom Canning) en "I Thought I Heard the Devil" (Walter Trout) onvervalste, stevige bluesrock laten horen. John Mayall's levensbeschouwing op de afsluitende piano blues ballad "The Mists of Time" met een schitterend op lead gitaar solerende Buddy Whittington behoort tot de prijsnummers.

wederom een sterk album uit de nadagen van 's mans rijke carrière waarop hij met zijn "Stories" zijn liefde betoonde voor de blues. doet wat mij betreft niet onder voor albums als "A Sense of Place" of "Spinning Coin".
