Enkele woorden uitleg bij deze lijvige Triffids-box. Samen met de best of 'Wide Open Road' releasde Domino een gelimiteerde 10-disc deluxe editie die barst van het zeldzaam en onuitgegeven materiaal van mijn favoriete band van down under.

CD 1: Wide Open Road - The Best Of the Triffids
De best of die ook afzonderlijk verkrijgbaar is. Niets nieuws onder de zon, wel stuk voor stuk prachtige Triffids-klassiekers.

CD 2
The Early Singles and EP’s
Nummers van oude singles en EP's, waarvan sommigen hier voor het eerst verschijnen op cd. Topnummers: Beautiful Waste, Convent Walls en You Don't Miss Your Water

CD3
The Early Cassettes – A selection from the Triffids' First, Second, Third & Fourth.
Zowat het vroegste wat er te vinden te is van The Triffids. Voor het eerst op cd: nummers van de oude cassettes (1978-1979), toen de band enkel bestond uit David McComb, Alsy Macdonald en Phil Kakulas. Leuk om de oorsprong te horen van de Triffids zoals we hen kennen, maar deze liedjes op zich zijn verder niet van opzienbarende kwaliteit.

The Early Cassettes – The Triffids' Fifth and Sixth.
Zie cd 3.

CD 5
Grandson Of Dungeon Tape. Dungeon Tape and Son Of Dungeon Tape – A Selection
Opnieuw een cassette die voor het eerst op cd werd gezet. Met vroege versies van nummers als Too Hot to Move, Spanish Blue en Red Pony. Leuk schijfje.

CD 6
Live to air on 3PBS from the Regal Room at The Prince Of Wales Hotel, St Kilda - 16/4/84
Ook voor het eerst op cd: deze live-set met weinig 'hits', maar wel solide uitvoeringen van o.a. Field of Glass en Ain't No Sunshine (van Bill Withers).

CD 7
Live at The London School Of Economics 13/10/84
Nog een live-cd, dit keer wél met veel klassiekers. Vooral Raining Pleasure en Hell of a Summer blinken uit.

CD 8
Live At Melbourne University 27/03/88
Het absolute hoogtepunt van de box. Een live-cd ten tijde van Calenture, die opent met het epische Wide Open Road en afsluit met de wondermooie cover Can't Help Falling in Love with You. En ook alles daartussen is super. Dit zijn The Triffids in volle glorie. Kippenvelmateriaal! Net zoals de vorige cd's is de geluidskwaliteit (zeker voor een live-cd) erg goed trouwens.

CD 9 Jack Brabham 2010 Volume 1 Live recordings, unreleased tracks and historical snippets 1977 to 1989
Demo's, b-sides, covers, alternatieve versies en meer van dat. Into the Groove van Madonna komt voorbij, alsook een sterke versie van Rent van Pet Shop Boys.

CD10 Jack Brabham 2010 Volume 2 Demos, Unheard Songs and Historical Snippets 1977 to 1988
Zie cd 9. De hoogtepunten hier zijn de demo's en rehearsals van Save What You Can en New Year's Greeting, twee van mijn all-time favourites.

Samengevat is Come Ride with Me... een prachtige compilatie die een erg compleet beeld van The Triffids (een band die - gezien de hoge kwaliteit van hun materiaal - nooit echt de bekendheid kreeg die ze verdiende) weergeeft.

Lijkt me geweldig. Is de box betaalbaar? Geweldige band. Ze kwamen toch uit Perth?

De juiste prijs herinner ik me niet meer, ik geloof dat het tussen 80 en 100 euro was. Maar volgens mij is 'm nu uitverkocht. Ik kan hem alleszins niet terugvinden op Internet.

Ja, ze komen inderdaad uit Perth.
