Is deze daadwerkelijk zoveel slechter dan de voorgaande twee als Allmusic zegt?

Welnee. Het loopt qua niveau wel wat af. Vol 1 is het beste, daarna 2 en daarna 3. Maar Stax-Volt maakt gewoon ijzersterke, rauwere soul.

Allmusic blijft gewoon een vreemde website; soms geven ze 2* aan een album, maar dan nog zeggen ze dat het album zeer de moeite waard is, en de andere keer geven ze een hele dikke classic 2* en zeggen ze dat de artiest zijn beste tijd wel gehad heeft, en dat het niks is.

Deze boxset is de opvolger van de fantastische delen 1 en 2. Dit Volume 3 bevat 10 CD's over een periode van een kleine 4 jaar (1972-1975) met 213 singles. Helaas wordt vanaf hier het hoge overall niveau van volume 1&2 niet vastgehouden. Vanaf 1968 belandt Stax / Volt in het post-Atlantic tijdperk en brengt het flink meer singles uit. Waar dat voor de kwaliteit van volume 2 nauwelijks effect heeft, begint zich dat hier wat te wreken. Er staat naast veel uitstekende muziek, ook flink wat muziek op die hooguit aardig te noemen is.

Positief zijn de bijzondere 'gems' die hierop staan. Artiesten en/of nummers waar ik nog nooit of nauwelijks van had gehoord. Er staan flink wat mooie tot fantastische van die onbekende pareltjes op deze box. Persoonlijke favorieten die ook op dit Volume 3 te horen zijn, zijn The Soul Children & Little Milton. Daarnaast vind je op deze box natuurlijk heel veel werk van sterren als Isaac Hayes, Rufus en Carla Thomas, the Bar-Keys, Eddie Floyd, blueszanger Albert King en The Staple Singers. Wel daarbij de aantekening dat van de singles van bijvoorbeeld iemand als Isaac Hayes de beste singles op Volume 2 staan.

Toch mag ook deze boxset er weer wezen. Er staat nog steeds weinig op wat ik echt minder vind, hoewel dus het aantal wel aardige nummers is toegenomen vergeleken met de eerdere delen. Ruim de helft van de singles vind ik goed tot uitstekend, wat toch nog heel wat nummers zijn. Vandaar dat ik mijn score wat naar boven heb afgerond naar 4*.
Dus als je ook maar een beetje van Soul houdt dan is deze box The Complete Stax-Volt Soul Singles Volume 3 1972-1975 de moeite waard. Het is een mooi, vaak tijdloos en goed, historisch muzikaal document.
