The Young Tradition - Oberlin 1968 (2013)

een live album dat in 2013 verscheen van een concert dat de Young Tradition ooit 45 jaar geleden gaf op de universiteit Oberlin College, Ohio, VS.

een illuster folk gezelschap uit de 60's dat bestond uit de Engelsen Peter Bellamy afkomstig uit Bournemouth, Heather Wood uit Sheffield en de Amerikaan Royston Wood (geen familie) die dit trio in 1965 in Londen formeerden. de groep hief zichzelf op in 1969.

een a-capella groep die destijds de aandacht trok door zich tijdens optredens als rocksterren te verkleden. de liedjes die zij vertolken zijn voornamelijk traditionals die hen via overlevering van anderen bereikten zoals via het uit Sussex afkomstige folkgezelschap The Copper Family, de uit Norfolk afkomstige folk singer Harry Cox, uit de collecties van Cecil Sharp of Ralph Vaughan Williams of een enkele keer "The Two Magicians" getipt werden door iemand als folk icoon Martin Carthy. alle overige liedjes zijn merendeels "sea shanty" songs, waaronder "Heave Away, Me Johnny" een nummer dat Roger McGuinn zou coveren op zijn gelijknamige debuut album (1973). ook het veel gecoverde "John Barleycorn" (o.a. Traffic) ontbreekt niet.

i.p.v. de muziek gedateerd te noemen kun je die beter in de tijdgeest van de 60's plaatsen. de groep oogstte destijds veel succes met hun optredens in het VK en ook daarbuiten (Canada, USA). een vergelijking met de a-capella zang van het folk familiegezelschap The Watersons ligt voor de hand, waarbij mijn voorkeur uitgaat naar de rijkere, vollere zang van de onvolprezen Watersons.

deelcitaat van Heather Wood (R.I.P. 15-07-2024) die de laatst overlevende van de groep was en vanaf 1977 in New York woonde:

"The Young Tradition really started on 18 April 1965, when I walked into the Scots Hoose, a pub in London, and heard Pete and Royston for the first time. It ended on 29 September 1969 with a farewell concert at Cecil Sharp House, headquarters of the English Folk Dance & Song Society, in London.

We sang all over England and Scotland, and made one foray to Belfast. We played venues ranging from local folk clubs to the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and Liverpool Cathedral. Fun was had.

Because we had this pad in Kilburn, London, where many visiting American musicians stayed, it seemed natural that we should tour in America. We somehow persuaded our record company, Transatlantic, to advance us the money for the airfares. In 1967, we landed on the Fourth of July. We played Gerde's Folk City in NYC, the Newport Festival in Rhode Island, and a club called the Mousehole in Toronto, where we appeared for four nights. Gordon Lightfoot came down every night - which we much appreciated.

Our third tour began on Tuesday 12 November 1968. We did concerts in Philadelphia and Boston (Club 47), then headed to Oberlin College in Ohio, where this recording was made. As I recall, many of the students and some of the faculty were on hunger strike, protesting the army being allowed to recruit on campus"

My memories of those days are hazy, to say the least. It was, after all, the Sixties.
