The Watersons - Early Days (1994)

een juweeltje voor de liefhebber van authentieke, a capella folk muziek, in dit geval van het onvolprezen folkgezelschap afkomstig uit Hull, Yorkshire. zij stonden destijds mede aan de wieg van de revival van de Engelse volksmuziek. de groep begon begin jaren zestig ooit als "skiffle" band en men besloot zich daarna toe te leggen op het vertolken van Engelse (soms eeuwenoude) traditionele liederen. in het begin waren zij actief onder de naam "The Folksons". dit is een collectie van hun vroegste werk die zij als "The Watersons" maakten. pure, schitterende harmoniezang van slechts 4 stemmen. het enige instrument dat op deze re-issue verzamelaar te horen valt, is een gitaar (tracks 8,10,11). alle songs zijn traditionals, uitgezonderd het door Ewan MacColl geschreven 13) The Thirty-Foot Trailer. de traditionals betreffen "sea & shanty" songs, "whaling" (over de walvisvaart) songs, "nursery & love songs", etc.

het 1e album van de groep was "Frost and Fire" uit 1965. dit album is nog redelijk verkrijgbaar.
de nummers op deze compilatie zijn afkomstig van de volgende albums die moeilijk of niet meer verkrijgbaar zijn:

track 1 t/m 5 betreft alle 5 tracks afkomstig van de Topic verzamelaar "New Voices, an album of first recordings by Harry Boardman, Maureen Craik & The Waterson Family" (1965)

tracks 7 t/m 18 van het gelijknamige album "The Watersons" (1966), van dit album ontbreekt slechts 1 track "The Plains of Mexico". track 6) Rap Her to Bank oorspronkelijk bestemd voor uitgave op dit album, werd niet eerder uitgebracht

tracks 19 t/m 27 van het album "A Yorkshire Garland"(1966), van de totaal 14 tracks op dit album ontbreken er 4 tracks

deze muziek moet wel je ding zijn, maar de liefhebber zal zeker verheugd zijn met deze release uit 1994 van 27 nummers met 77 minuten prachtige Engelse a capella folk muziek.
