Geoff Muldaur and The Texas Sheiks - Texas Sheiks (2009)

een project van Geoff Muldaur als geste aan zijn toen nog levende muzikale maatje Stephen Bruton, waarbij hij een aantal muzikanten om zich heen verzamelde onder de naam Texas Sheikhs inclusief Stephen Bruton. de naam Texas Sheikhs is een verwijzing naar het illustere country/blues gezelschap The Mississippi Sheikhs. het nummer "Please, Baby" (Bo Carter) werd in 1931 voor het eerst door hen opgenomen. een cover van dit nummer verscheen ook op het gelijknamige album van The Notting Hillblllies (met Mark Knopfler).

er staan 8 traditionals op dit album plus een 6-tal covers "All By Myself" (Big Bill Broonzy), "Hard Time Killin' Floor" (Skip James), "Travellin' Riverside" (Robert Johnson), "Yellow Dog Blues" (W.C. Handy), "Fan It" (van de vaudeville artiest Frankie Jaxon & Dan Howell) en het eerder genoemde "Please, Baby".

een mix van oude Amerikaanse muziek met folk, country, blues, jug band music, rag time, string band, swing ofwel "old time music". Geoff Muldaur deelt de lead vocalen met blues muzikant Johnny Nicholas die o.a. speelde met Big Walter Horton en de band Asleep At The Wheel, Jim Kweskin van de sixties band The Jim Kweskin Jug Band en Bruce Hughes die met Stephen Bruton samenspeelde in de Austin rootsrock band The Resentments. onder de muzikanten bevinden zich verder Cindy Cashdollar die met o.a. Rick Danko, Levon Helm en Paul Butterfield samen speelde en op tournee ging met Bob Dylan, Van Morrison en Rod Stewart. cajun fiddler Suzy Thompson is afkomstig uit de old time music scene van Californië.

ondanks het allegaartje aan stijlen klinkt dit smaakvolle "feel good" album toch als een eenheid. een jaar later verscheen het album "The Mississippi Sheikhs Tribute Concert" (2010) m.m.v. van o.a. Geoff Muldaur. Rory Gallagher vernoemde ooit een nummer naar dit gezelschap op zijn album "Photo-Finish" maar dat terzijde.

"Turner S. Bruton passed away on May 9, 2009. This album is lovingly dedicated to his memory. Early in 2008, Roger Kasle and I decided to put together some recording sessions in Austin, Texas. Our friend, Stephen Bruton, was in a battle with cancer and we were looking to change the subject...let Stephen have a little fun picking some easy ones with his friends. We recorded in late April and again in October of 2008 and the results are right here on this album. My sincere thanks to Roger Kasle for making this project happen and for giving Stephen and the rest of us the opportunity to have one of the most enjoyable times we have ever had in the recording studio"
