verwacht geen authentieke Ierse folk op dit album. het is een fusie album van Balkan muziek afkomstig uit Bulgarije en Macedonië vermengd met Ierse folk invloeden. de complexe veelal sterk ritmische muziek is vol en rijk geïnstrumenteerd.
het initiatief voor dit album kwam van het Ierse folkicoon Andy Irvine (bouzouki, hurdy-gurdy) die op dit album een duo vormde met Davy Spillane (uileann pipes, low whistle), die eerder o.a. deel uitmaakte van de Ierse folkband Moving Hearts met Donal Lunny en Christy Moore.
van de 7 instrumentale nummers, veelal "dance tunes", heeft de Macedonische traditional "Dance of Suleiman" nog wel iets weg van Ierse folk, maar op de overige nummers overheersen de ritmische invloeden uit de Balkan.
de 2 nummers met zang bekoren het meeste en vormen fraaie rustpunten, de ballads "The Bear's Rock" en "Kadana" met prachtige zang van de Hongaarse zangeres Marta Sebestyen bekend van haar solo albums en haar werk met de Hongaarse folkband Muzsikas.
de afsluiter "Hard on the Heels" is een nieuwe versie van "Smeceno Horo" dat eerder verscheen op het Planxty album "After the Break".
er is een belangrijke gastrol weggelegd voor de Bulgaarse muzikant Nikola Parov (bouzouki, gadulka, kaval & gaida). onder de Ierse muzikanten bevinden zich verder Bill Whelan (toetsen), John Sheahan (fiddle ex Dubliners), Mairtin O'Connor (accordion ex De Danann) en Anthony Drennan (guitar).
hoewel het muzikale vakmanschap van dit album afspat zal dit niet ieders "cup of tea" zijn.

"The idea of making an album of Bulgarian and Macedonian music has been around for a while now - since Planxty days to be exact. Long animated discussions have been held in Public Houses during this time but in spite of some great ideas and some hilarious evenings nothing has come of it - till now.
Back in 1968, I hit the road for the Balkans and spent a year and a half travelling around, sleeping in orchards, taking in the sights and the sounds and falling in love with the music and the people. I hauled a bunch of records back to Ireland, locked myself away and tried to get the hang of the rhythms. Not only have I been trying to play this music ever since but I've been trying to get half the musicians of Ireland to play it as well.
We started out to make a Bulgarian/Jazz fusion album but somewhere along the line that idea got dropped and we made this instead. I don't really know what you'd call it, no doubt somebody will think of a pigeon hole to put it in, meanwhile, in the words of the old song - "the music goes round and round and it comes out here......"
