aanstekelijke, ongeremde muziek van 4 bands afkomstig uit het koninkrijk Lesotho, zeg maar een binnenstaat van Zuid-Afrika, waarbij de basis bezetting wordt gevormd door zang en percussie/drums met een prominente rol voor de accordeon aangevuld door basgitaar.
wellicht dat 12 nummers iets teveel van het goede is, want de composities en de uitvoering daarvan lijken onderling sterk op elkaar en dat leidt tot wat eenvormigheid.
hierbij een (deel) citaat uit de liner notes van Robin Hogarth:
"These four bands are all traditional South Sotho or Sheshwe bands, based in the gold-mines of the Orange Free State of South Africa. Their members are migrant mineworkers with their home roots in the majestic mountain land of Lesotho. Their music strongly represents the culture of their people.
On any given weekend or holiday from the miners, one may find one of these bands playing in a dusty mining compound, to the obvious enjoyment of hundreds of their compatriots. Their audience is part of the social event itself, joining in, recalling the sounds and sentiments of home.
The song "The Boy In the Bubble" from Paul Simon's hit album Graceland utilizes South Sotho music and instrumentation. The music is interspersed with whistling, and is both sung and spoken by way of a fast energetic rap. The lyrics themselves are virtually ad-lib, with the singer making up ideas and anecdotes as he goes along, prodding the audience into response and action"
