Radio Tarifa - Temporal (1996)

Ik ben sinds eergisteren trotse eigenaar van deze prachtige plaat. Hier botsen twee verschillende kulturen op elkaar, de arabische en de spaanse....en het werkt. Net als een "Couseila van Rafik Tlatli", de orientaals versie van de Paella.

De sporen van de achthonderd jaar lange arabisch-islamitische invloed zijn tot op de dag van vandaag hoorbar gebleven. Hun muziek is een mixture van oude Mediterraneane muziek instrumente als "derbuka" en "ney" met flamenco rhythm, hand drums als ook Afro-Cubanse bongos. Hun gezang is in het spaans en arabians.

Waar komt hun naam Radio Tarifa vandaan? Ik heb gelezen dat het een fiktieve radiostation is. Tarfa is ook een stad bij Algeciras dicht bij Gribaltar. En bij Tarifa landen die Arabieren (711) en veroveren in korte tijd bijna het hele schiereiland, dat zij Al-Andalus noemen. Alleen een smalle strook in het noorden - Ishbâniya- het huidige Galicië - blijft onder christelijke heerschappij.

Ik heb deze cd gisteren vier keer geluisterd, het is onmiddelijk een nieuwe highlight in mijn verzameling geworden. Geweldig! Net als "Couseila van Rafik Tlatli





Mijn vriendin heeft dit net op hun website gevonden. Het ziet er naar uit dat radio niet letterlijk moet worden genomen:

"The name RADIO TARIFA is an explicit reference to the type of musical wave that the group wants its listeners to catch - Cape Tarifa is the point of Spain which is closest to Africa. According to the group : "Tarifa is a frontier town, a no-man´s land and, above all, the Mediterranean´s balcony". RADIO TARIFA´s world is one of Iberian musical styles (flamenco, Arab-Andalucian, medieval and Castillian) where unfolding melodies and an enriched rhythmic base permit continued dialogue between the percussive instruments, wood and string sections, and voice.
Distancing itself from all forms of musical purism in their choice of timbres and treatment of melodies, the group mixes arrangements of traditional compositions with their own original works. They use instruments which were played in Ancient Egypt (ney : a cane flute), and others from classical Greek and Roman times (Mediterranean instruments such as the wooden oboe or harmonium), combining them with modern instruments like the saxophone or electric bass guitar. The resultant music is both familiar and exotic.

Since the release of "Rumba Argelina", they have played in hundreds of concerts and each time RADIO TARIFA plays, they leave their audience hypnotized by their richness of rhythms and melodies. Wel goed dat je dit onder de aandacht brengt, Radio Tarifa maakt inderdaad muziek waarin stijlen heel fraai tesamen komen, waar de meeste van dit soort etno-fusion niet echt genieten is.

Ook de plaat die hieraan vooraf ging "Rumba Argelina" is erg de moeite waard.
