bijzonder fraaie authentieke Schotse folk van The McCalmans die ook wel liefkozend "The Macs" werden genoemd. de groep werd vernoemd naar 1 van de oprichters van de groep, de uit Edinburgh afkomstige Ian McCalman en begon ooit als de Ian McCalman Folk Group.
op dit album staan 15 Schotse traditionals plus 1 cover "Nagasaki" een Amerikaans jazz liedje uit 1928 van Harry Warren en Mort Dixon dat o.a. bekend werd in de versie van de Mills Brothers, een vocaal pop/jazz kwartet die de groep bewonderde.
prachtige 3-stemmige harmoniezang, op een fraaie manier muzikaal omlijst met instrumenten als concertina en "whistles" met een aantal a-capella gezongen liederen, zoals "Gardens", "No Churchman Am I" en het eerder genoemde "Nagasaki", up tempo in koor gezongen nummers "The Boatie Rows/The Carls of Dysart", "The Barnyards O' Delgaty" en "Johnnie Cope" en verder veel prachtige ballads zoals "If Mother Should Die", "The Flowers O' the Forest" en "The Silkie of Sule Skerry" een folk liedje uit de Schotse Shetland en Orkney eilanden.
alle liedjes hebben zo hun eigen verhaal en gaan vaak ver terug in de geschiedenis. zo gaat "Skye Boat Song" over ( a late 19-th century Scottish song recalling the journey of Bonnie Prince Charlie from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by government troops after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746). het gaat te ver om de rest hier toe te lichten.
slechts 1 instrumentaal nummer met "Hornpipes/Reels" eenvoudig te skippen als je daar geen liefhebber van ben. de muziek op dit album doet niet onder voor die van de Ierse Dubliners. een aanrader voor de liefhebbers van die groep of mooie harmoniezang.
