Heeft Nathan zijn verstand verloren? Hold on I'm Coming van Solomon Burke, Georgia on My Mind van James Brown, Ain't No Sunshine van Al Jarreau? Er klopt geen hout van die tracklist! Welnee en welja, lieve glasvezelbuiskinderen! Nee, mijn verstand is niet verloren, maar nog steeds aanwezig, ergens tussen mijn beider oren. Ja, dit is de goede tracklist.

Dit is een "20 CD Soul Box", aldus de verpakking. Gekocht voor 20 euro, en samen met deze afgerekend (daar was enig lef voor nodig). Het is grappig: beide zijn boxen met soul uit ongeveer dezelfde periode, maar in opzet zijn ze totaal anders. A Complete Introduction to Northern Soul is zorgvuldig samengesteld, ziet er goed uit en bevat een boekje met nuttige informatie. Harlem Shuffle is een bijeengeraapt zootje, ziet er uit alsof ze kartonnen dozen overhadden en daar toevallig 20 cd's inpasten en geeft niet meer informatie dan de tracklist die hierboven staat. (eigenlijk nog minder, want de tracktijden staan er niet bij).

Waarom heeft die gek deze verzameling dan gekocht? Iedere muziekliefhebber gruwt van een niet goed samengestelde compilatie! Ik niet, niet als het zo slecht is gedaan als bij deze box. Het voelt als struinen door de uitverkoopbak van de plaatselijke Music Store of Free Record Shop. Je komt tussen alle K-Otic's, de eerste generatie Idols, de tweederangs eurohousegroepjes en de vergeten one-hit-wonders regelmatig leuke dingen tegen. Zo zijn voor een prikkie bijvoorbeeld mijn liefde voor de Super Furry Animals en Blur begonnen.

Dat hoopte ik ook te vinden in deze box: misschien zijn er wel per ongeluk pareltjes van jewelste op deze box beland. En al is op elke cd maar één enkel pareltje te vinden, dan nog zijn dat 20 pareltjes en is de box het geld waard geweest. Ik ben vandaag begonnen met de eerste twee cd's en ik heb nu al bijzonder veel schik van/om deze box (misschien niet om de juiste redenen ). Ik kan het dan ook niet nalaten om mijn bevindingen hier te posten, per cd.

CD 1 (track 1 t/m 15) voldoet helemaal aan mijn verwachtingen van dit soort compilaties:
- Wat covers van bekende soulnummers in de schaal van overbodig (een te lange liveversie van Georgia on My Mind door James Brown en Ain't No Sunshine door Al Jarreau), naar onbegrijpelijk (Dock of the Bay van Dee Clark en een disco-achtige Hold On! I'm Coming door Solomon Burke). Nergens echt verschrikkelijk, maar allemaal op zijn minst overbodig.
- Wat opnieuw opgenomen nummers door de artiesten zelf, van overbodig (Walking the Dog, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted) tot verschrikkelijk (een disco-remake van My Guy)
- Wat klassiekers, zoals When a Man Loves a Woman en River Deep Mountain High (overigens niet de Phil Spector-versie, maar "die andere" versie).
- Nummers die ik nog niet kende, waarvan sommigen niet zo goed (Hey Girl Don't Bother Me en Your Heart and Soul), sommigen wel aardig (Tell It Like It Is van Aaron Neville, Kiddio van Brook Benton en Needle in a Haystack van The Whispers) en een enkele geweldig leuk (Lookin' for a Love van Bobby Womack).

De hoogtepunten op cd 1 zijn daarom wat mij betreft:
- Lookin' for a Love van Bobby Womack: een lekker up-tempo nummer en een fijne meezinger.
- When a Man Loves a Woman van Percy Sledge: een meer dan terechte klassieker.
- River Deep Mountain High van Ike & Tina Turner: niet het origineel, maar de andere versie. Dat mag de pret echter niet wegnemen!
