De muziek van Taj Mahal klinkt altijd lekker loom en relaxed, en dat bevalt me eigenlijk altijd wel erg goed. Live wordt dit gevoel nog eens extra versterkt. Op "The Real Thing" zorgt de toevoeging van blazers voor een warm en zomers gevoel. De blues en roots van Taj Mahal zijn doorgaans doorspekt met exotische invloeden en heeft soms ook een kleine reggae vibe. Op "The Real Thing" is dat niet anders en speelt Taj Mahal en zijn band met verve door een heerlijke set liedjes. "The Real Thing" is de ideale liveplaat voor een zomerse zwoele avond. Heerlijk!

het toepasselijk getitelde "The Real Thing" is en blijft wat mij betreft het ultieme live album van de inmiddels 83-jarige Taj Mahal. de muziek staat ruim 50 jaar later nog steeds als een huis.
inderdaad geen exotische muzikale invloeden of reggae op deze dubbelaar, maar country-folk/blues en door de toevoeging van een brass band big city blues vermengd met vleugjes ragtime, soul en jazz.
8 Taj Mahal originals waarvan een aantal co-written plus covers, de akoestische opener "Fishin' Blues", een nummer van countryblues legende Henry Thomas, het groovy stuwende "You're Going to Need Somebody on Your Bond" van Blind Willie Johnson en "Diving Duck Blues" van een andere blueslegende Sleepy John Estes, van wie ook Ry Cooder meerdere nummers coverde.
het eveneens akoestische "Tom and Sally Drake" laat een merkwaardige mix horen van banjo en tuba die wonderwel goed uitpakt. op "John Ain' It Hard wordt wat gas terug genomen, waarna het los gaat met de 2 uitbundig swingende slotnummers (10 en 11).
user kistenkuif heeft het hierboven al eerder goed omschreven "dat maakt van deze levendige concertregistratie een waar feest".

He was concerned with doing the very best blues he could do, country and city. He had hit upon the approach of singing something with no more than the air itself to accompany him, or with the guitar, or with an ensemble that rubbed up against what had happened in Chicago, when some of the soul of Mississippi went North. Or, in yet another surprise direction, he might stretch back to things that reminded one of the ragtime area, then reach for something that reminded one of the great Percy Mayfield. There was nothing to stop him from calling upon the sound that was making Otis Redding such a favorite of the time. By the time he got to this recording, Taj Mahal had established himself as an artist from whom one should be willing to expect the well-grounded, foot-patting, stomping, shuffling, rocking, but at the same time, the unconventional"
