wederom een groot aantal samenwerkingen met allerlei in dit geval Amerikaanse musici, waarop 12 door wijlen Paddy Moloney gearrangeerde traditionals staan plus covers van de coal mining classic "Dark as a Dungeon" (Merle Travis) en "Tennessee Stud" (James Driftwood), beide nummers verschenen eveneens op het onvolprezen "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" van The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (n.m.m. in betere versies).

"Down the Old Plank Road" is een heerlijke up-tempo opener met accenten van o.a. accordeon en mandoline. "Cindy" is een aanstekelijk bluegrass nummer met zang van Ricky Scaggs, "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" met onderkoelde zang van Lyle Lovett en "Rain and Snow" met de Del McCoury band, die een geweldig bluegrass album "The Mountain" maakten met Steve Earle, luisteren eveneens lekker weg.

als liefhebber van ballads gaat mijn voorkeur naar "Molly Ban" gezongen door de engelenstem van Alison Krauss, "Whole Heap of Little Horses" (Patty Griffin) en de wals "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight" (Martina McBride). fijne rustpunten op dit wat wisselvallige album.

absolute prijsnummer (althans voor mij) is de traditional "Katy Dear" met Gillian Welch en David Rawlings, een ingetogen versie, waarop de "Celtic sound" met o.a. Uileann pipes en fiddle bescheiden blijft.

van de 3 instrumentale nummers bevalt de onversneden bluegrass van "Sally Goodin" met o.a. banjo specialist wijlen Earl Scruggs het best. de (te) volle, rijke instrumentatie met o.a. fiddles overstuurd klinkende medley met "reels" (van oorsprong Keltische dansen met muziek in snelle 2/4 of 4/4 maat) en de lange finale "Give the Fiddler a Dram" zijn "not my cup of tea".
