Mijn eerste kennismaking met deze singer songwriter gitarist. Waanzinnig destijds, waanzinnig nu. Begenadigd gitarist, vele stijlen hoor je voorbij komen op de diverse albums. Met dit album werd ook Nederland bereikt en hoorde je zelfs op de radio een pracht song als Wondering where the lions are voorbij komen. Nog steeds een zeer zeer fraai album, de tand des tijds goed doorstaan. En dat hij een meester gitarist is staat buiten kijf. Prachtig. Bijzonder. Nog steeds. Opvolger Humans, o.a. Tokyo, zeer aan te bevelen. De productie wat verfijnder ook, de eighties wellicht.

tijdloos album van de inmiddels 78 jarige uit Ottawa, Ontario afkomstige Canadees Bruce Cockburn. behalve een uitstekende singer/songwriter is hij ook een meesterlijk gitarist. de man heeft inmiddels een zeer rijk, imposant oeuvre op zijn naam staan. in het lijstje "25 Best Ever Canadian Songwriters" staat de man op de 7e plek na 1) Joni Mitchell 2) Leonard Cohen 3) Neil Young 4) Buffy Sainte-Marie 5) Gordon Lightfoot en 6) Gordon Downie (van de band The Tragically Hip).
hoewel de man destijds al langere tijd populariteit genoot in zijn thuisland Canada, betekende dit album destijds tevens zijn doorbraak in de United States, dankzij de hitsingle "Wondering Where The Lions Are", een laid-back nummer met een reggae ritme, dat de 21e plek bereikte in de Amerikaanse Billboard Hot 100.
de opener "Creation Dream" met een prachtig intro van akoestisch gitaarspel aangevuld door spel op de marimba zet meteen de toon van dit album. een heerlijk melodieus nummer waar het zwierige "Hills of Morning" niet voor onder doet. voor mij zijn dit de 2 beste tracks op dit album, maar in feite doen alle andere tracks er niet of nauwelijks voor onder. een zeer coherent album zonder zwakke plekken van een maatschappelijk geëngageerd artiest met teksten die ergens over gaan.
de instrumentale bonus tracks zijn een fraaie aanvulling op het originele album. het meditatieve, rustgevende met "chimes" omlijste "Dawn Music" en "Bye Bye Idi" dat hij schreef na de omverwerping van het regime van de Oegandese dictator Idi Amin is een hoogtepunt op dit album met onnavolgbaar gitaarspel van de man. het nummer deed mij denken aan het spel van Richard Thompson op "1952 Vincent Black Lightning", ook zo'n nummer waarop je denkt 2 gitaristen te horen.
de man brengt nog steeds albums uit. ben benieuwd naar zijn in 2023 verschenen album "O Sun O Moon".
