The Georgia Satellites - In the Land of Salvation and Sin (1989)

Vuige rock, in de traditie van Creedence. Hoes spreekt over 'big 'lectric guitar', met foto van fles whiskey. Wellicht wat stereotyp, maar beukt als de beste!

Als enige liefhebber van deze plaat, neem ik de vrijheid om de recensie uit rolling stone 1990 maar te plaatsen, wellicht dathet iemand helpt om om deze cd toch eens op te zoeken...

"Though the 'Land of Salvation and Sin' is steeped in tradition, the Georgia Satellites make it sound like virgin territory. This is a coming-of-age album for the band, whose first two efforts had energy to burn but not enough musical inspiration. Good-ol'-boyisms dominated the Satellites' material, and the reductive riffing of too much of their music made it seem as if Bachman-Turner Overdrive had motored south. The novelty appeal of "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" marked the band as a one-hit wonder, and the follow-up album was a commercial stiff. The Satellites clearly faced a grow-or-die challenge with album 3.

The musical range and emotional richness of In the Land of Salvation and Sin suggest that these guys play best when their backs are to the wall. "Another Chance," the album's first single, shows that struggle and survival are as integral to the album as salvation and sin. Dedicated to Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane, whose music with the Faces has long been a Satellites touchstone, the acoustic anthem is every bit as Southern as one would expect but miles removed from the bar-band basics that once fully defined the Satellites' music.

The gritty balladry of "All Over but the Cryin'" and the bittersweet lyrics of "Sweet Blue Midnight" signal the maturity of Dan Baird as a songwriter, while key contributions from Ian McLagan (veteran keyboardist from the Faces) and singer Nicolette Larson give extra texture to the band's guitar-driven sound.

While the album elevates the Satellites to a new artistic orbit, the high-octane rock of "I Dunno," "Slaughterhouse" and "Dan Takes Five" shows that the group hasn't become too refined to slam the pedal through the metal. If Keith Richards and the late Gram Parsons had been able to continue their musical friendship, they would have felt right at home In the Land of Salvation and Sin. (RS 569)

Dat ze Britse 70'er jaren rock als invloed hebben is duidelijk, bij tijden denk je de Faces zelf te horen. Maar geef me toch maar ( tijdgenoten) de Black Crowes dan, die vind ik toch strakker, ietsje origineler en ook flink wat rauwer. En die hebben beter hun huiswerk gedaan. (Hoewel, op album bedoel ik dat natuurlijk, live zouden ze denk ik allebei voor flink wat vuurwerk kunnen zorgen)

Hier hoor je, wellicht door de ietwat vlakke ''wall of sound'' productie, toch soms wat van die vieze Amerikaanse 80's rocksound in doorklinken.
Dus, hoe goed sommige liedjes ook zijn (All Over But The Cryin' ), toch verpesten die vervelende trekjes hier en daar wel een liedje voor mij.

Deze zanger wint het wel van Chris Robinson trouwens, fantastische stem.

Al met al schommelt het tussen de 3,5 en de 4 in.

tuurlijk de faces! zegt dan baird ook, stole it right from them, ooolala.
album is inderdaad zo vet en overtrokken, maar kwaliteit komt zo boven.
is natuurlijk geen richtingzettende plaat, maar in lijn van creedence, earring, stones, lynyrd etc beter dan voorgenoemden en toch ruim 50 minuten genot voor fans van bovengenoemde bands.
blijf bij de 5 en zou graag de 4 van tondeman corrigeren met een 6 of 6,5, maar toch dank voor belangstelling!

Misschien kwam ik wat negatief over, maar al met al vind ik het toch wel een prima plaatje hoor

Hey, reakties bij een album van de Satellites! Goed om te zien. Wat mij betreft is dit het beste album van de band. De eerste twee zijn ook prima maar daarop is het songmateriaal nogal ééndimensionaal. Op deze proberen ze wat andere dingen uit en die bevallen me goed. Zo vind ik de ballad All over but the cryin' zeer geslaagd en mag ook de cover van, het toch wel door de Sisi commercial verpeste, Games people play er zeker zijn. Gelukkig wordt er ook nog voldoende ongegeneerd gerocked en geronkt. Deze schijf klinkt ook het beste van de 3 vind ik. Lekker heldere produktie waarbij alle instrumenten goed naar voren komen.

Ik vind de eerste twee albums juist een stuk beter.. Vooral de productie van dit 3e album vind ik beroerd, het haalt de rauwe randen weg die eerder wel aanwezig waren.
