Het is zo langzamerhand tijd om de eindejaarslijst op te maken. Daarom luister ik alle 2021- releases die ik in huis heb gehaald nog eens om het gehoor op te frissen en te zien of mijn standpunt ten aanzien van het album is veranderd.
Ik kwam dit album op het spoor omdat Steve DiGiorgio, een van mijn favoriete bassisten, meedoet op dit album. En dan blijkt zomaar dat deze band enkele oud-leden van het Noorse Spiral Architect huisvest! Ne Plus Ultra bevat stevige progressieve metal zoals die vooral in de VS gemaakt wordt. Denk aan bijvoorbeeld Watchtower, Nevermore, Psychotic Waltz en Fates Warning. Ook de geest van Spiral Architect waart rond op dit album, maar dan in een veel minder complexe vorm.
