Ascension Codes is een moeilijk te doorgronden en bij tijden wisselvallig album geworden. Dat eerste is niet erg, maar de wisselvalligheid staat een hoge score in de weg. Die wisselvalligheid slaat vooral op kant C, met DNA Activation Template - dat alleen in de laatste minuut interessant is - ,Architects of Consiousness en Aurora waar de band een beetje stuurloos lijkt.
Daar tegenover staan geweldige nummers als het instrumentale The Wingend Ones (hallo Pat Metheny), Elements and Their Inhabitants en de twee afsluitende nummers die werkelijk fantastische progfusion (of zoiets) laten horen. Kortom, de band scoort goed op kant A en D. Dankzij kant B en C scoort dit album toch een vleesch-noch-visch-cijfer.....
