Eric Clapton - Crossroads (1988)

"Crossroads" is het meest complete verzamelwerk van Eric Clapton. Het geeft een zoveel mogelijk chronologisch overzicht van het werk van Clapton. Van The Yardbirds, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delainey & Bonnie, Derek and The Dominos tot zijn solowerk. Bij het beluisteren van "Crossroads" komt het besef telkens weer bovendrijven wat een geniaal gitarist/muzikant Eric Clapton eigenlijk is. Hij drukt zijn stempel op elk project wat hij onderneemt en het klinkt ook nog eens erg divers allemaal, al is de basis voor het werk van Clapton de blues. "Crossroads" is het perfecte instappakket voor niet Clapton kenners, voor de echte fans is het wederom een bevestiging van de grootsheid van Slowhand.

Crossroads was zo'n boxset die jaren geleden mijn ogen uitstak, maar die me eerlijk gezegd toch net wat te duur was. Vandaag de dag blijkt die echter vrij goedkoop te vinden zijn (ik heb 15 euro betaald en voor 4CDs met een hoop unreleased materiaal - daarover straks meer - en een meer dan 40 pagina's tellend boek is dat absoluut geen slechte prijs lijkt me) en voor eenieder die geïnteresseerd is in het muzikale oeuvre van Clapton is dit absoluut een interessante box. Je krijgt in ieder geval een fijne dwarsdoorsnede voorgeschoteld van de carrière van Clapton beginnende met The Yardbirds en naarmate je verder geraakt kom je nog supergroepen tegen zoals Cream en Derek & the Dominos om uiteindelijk te eindigen met zijn solowerk. Het interessante is dan ook dat Crossroads veel materiaal bevat dat nooit is uitgebracht (althans toch op moment van release, misschien is dat nu anders) of gewoon niet zo makkelijk te vinden is. Een verzameling van singles (waaronder de door Phil Spector geproduceerde "Tell the Truth" / "Roll It Over" single voor Derek & the Dominos die nog zonder Duane Allman werd gemaakt en die nadien werd ingetrokken), wat livemateriaal en nummers die nooit op een regulier album zijn terecht gekomen.

Voor eenieder die geïnteresseerd is in wat de box nu exact bevat en vanwaar sommige recordings komen, ik heb voor mijn eigen klassement een overzicht gemaakt aan de hand van de informatie in het boek. Misschien dat er hier en daar nog een foutje is ingeslopen - het is een lijvige tracklist - maar bij deze:
