wat een tekst!

Ja idd, wat een tekst. Wordt dat nummer ook niet gebruikt in de intro van de film Hurricane?

Eindelijk ik heb wat van deze legende beluisterd . En dat is me zeer goed bevallen. Gil is een poeet van de bovenste plank heeft scherpe teksten een stem die geweldig is en veel kracht en warmte uitstraalt. Naast het spokenword kan de man geweldig zingen (dit doet hij zeer sterk op het einde van de cd). De conga geeft het een prachtige sfeer mee.

I.v.m. zijn overlijden weer eens opgezet. Prachtig album. Dit bevalt mij beter dan The Last Poets.

Mooi album met vooral een indrukwekkende voordracht van Gil Scott-Heron. Hoe zijn stem na de introductie van de gedichten omslaat van schuchter en laid back naar zelfverzekerd en intens, dat is echt heel mooi.

En ook de gedichten en liedjes zelf zijn schitterend, Scott-Heron die als boze straatdichter stevig met zijn voeten op de grond staat, en niemand spaart die wel zweeft. Zowel de hypocriete zwarte revolutionair die het overzicht is kwijtgeraakt of niet wil zien, als de blanke man die niet verder wil kijken dan zijn neus lang is, als de media (toen al!) krijgen er stevig van langs. Het is geen pose, Gil is echt boos en spuwt zijn gal omdat iets in hem ertoe dwingt. Een echte Artiest dus. Tegelijkertijd verliest hij de humor niet uit het oog, niet in zijn introducties, en ook niet in zijn gedichten.

Enig minpuntje van dit indrukwekkende debuut: af en toe gaan de teksten wat langs me heen. Ze zitten immers vol met verwijzingen naar de politieke en culturele realiteit van Amerika anno 1970, en al draagt dat langs de ene kant bij aan de sfeer van de plaat, ik raak af en toe de draad wel een beetje kwijt.

Als kind van de blanke middenklasse heb ik een beetje het gevoel dat deze plaat niet echt voor mij gemaakt is, maar toch kan ik hier erg van genieten.

De boosheid en betrokkenheid van Gil Scott-Heron komt uiterst oprecht over op dit album (is het nou een live- of studioplaat? Voor beide valt wat te zeggen, vind ik), en wordt nog versterkt door het indringende geluid van de conga's. Gil speelt hier en daar wat piano of gitaar, dat zorgt voor een extra muzikale dimensie. De teksten primeren (Gil was in de eerste plaats een begenadigd dichter), maar in een nummer als afsluiter Everyday laat hij horen ook in staat te zijn tot het brengen van een beklijvend funk/soul-nummer.
