Ik zie dat er nog geen bericht is gepost over deze 18-CD & 2 Blu-Ray prachtbox.
Eerdere - qua omvang vergelijkbare - CD boxen van Camel en Van Der Graaf Generator heb ik destijds niet aangeschaft omdat ik bijna alles ervan al in bezit had. Ik heb ze trouwens wel enkele weken te leen gehad en ze zijn beide hun prijs dubbel en dwars waard, maar dat terzijde.
In dit geval lag het anders want van Peter Hammill had ik slechts Sitting Targets op LP en Over en Room Temperature Live op CD.
Deze Hammill CD box is inmiddels in mijn bezit en ik ben er erg tevreden over. De geluidskwaliteit is zonder meer in orde. Ik kan alleen een vergelijking maken met de CD Over waarvan ik de eerst uitgebrachte versie heb. Die klinkt ook niet verkeerd met een authentieke en mooie 'analoge' klank, vooral in de rustige passages. De remaster klinkt daar wat droger maar wel met een wat beter uitgebalanceerd geluidsbeeld en een zeer detailrijk geluid met meer definitie. Beter kan ik het niet verwoorden, zoiets is ook een kwestie van smaak, je moet het eigenlijk gewoon zelf ervaren.
Het geheel omvat dertien geremasterde studioalbums, twee remixed stereo albumversies en is her en der aangevuld met demo- en live materiaal en drie live CD's.
De Blu-Rays bevatten 5.1 mixen van ‘The Future Is Now’ & ‘pH7’ en enkele TV opnames.
Het geheel zit in een stevige kartonnen doos (LP-formaat).
De verpakking van de CD's daarin vind ik niet optimaal en heb ze daarom meteen overgezet in CD doosjes.
Er zit een heel mooi uitgevoerd en uitgebreid boekwerk bij met alle albumhoesafbeeldingen op LP formaat, uiteraard tal van foto's, concertaffiche en tape afbeeldingen, enkele posters en een bespreking van enkele bladzijden per album door Peter Hammill zelf waarin hij gedetailleerd de context ervan met onder andere zijn persoonlijke leven en muziektechnisch gezien beschrijft.
Heel interessant en leerzaam leesvoer. Hij is niet alleen een goede muzikant en componist maar ook een creatieve experimentator op allerlei gebied.
Ook noodgedwongen, want in het begin was er nauwelijks geld beschikbaar en moest alles thuis opgenomen worden met simpele apparatuur, soms zelfs in de vrieskou omdat de verwarming uit moest vanwege storende klikken op het lichtnet.
Er zit overigens ook nog een briefkaartje bij waar de handtekening van de "Meester" op zou moeten staan, die "krabbel" ontbrak in dit geval helaas, maar goed, een kniesoor die daar over valt toch?
