Sigur Rós Hard at Work on Fourth Album

According to Sigur Rós' official website, the Icelandic ambient pop band have recently wandered back into their mythical studio to record a follow-up of the full-length nature to their wonderfully ambiguous 2002 release, ( ). The album is expected to be released in spring 2005, to be followed by a tour of Europe, North America, and perhaps some other Sigur Rós-friendly parts of the world. Possible titles include any unpronounceable shapes that do not resemble a toilet seat.
The album is being recorded at the band's own studio, Sundlaugin. The space, converted from a swimming pool built in the 1930s (we have no answer for you, sorry), was most recently the site of recording for Jimmy LaValle's In a Safe Place, just released last week on Sub Pop under his longtime alias The Album Leaf-- which, incidentally, features a prominent guest spot from Sigur frontman Jónsi Thor Birgisson on "Over the Pond".
Approximately a 15-minute drive from the Reykjavik centrum, the studio features a newly purchased Otari 24 channel analog tape machine, making it capable of "all-analogue" recording techniques which will offer crystalline clarity to the girlsongs emanating from deep within Jónsi's indestructible larynx, without involving any dirty computers (except the ones used in the digital transfer but what th' fuck ever).
The band's reps are being tight-lipped about the new record-- presumably because they probably haven't flown to Iceland to hear the material yet-- but we know of someone who has. Music journalist Bart Cameron has hinted at the album's new sound in a recent article for Reykjavik Grapevine (although, admittedly, the name of the publication does somewhat bring to question the paper's legitimacy). Cameron reportedly visited the studio last week, where, in addition to interviewing the band, he was allowed to sit in on a recording session. In the article, he likens the sound of one song to that of Belle & Sebastian's newest album, Dear Catastrophe Waitress, citing it as being "crystal clear, complex and hypermelodic," and calls another "powerhouse English tea time dream rock." Hired!
Finally, Sigur Rós have been keeping busy busy busy with film scoring projects projects projects (apologies-- it's all this cave echo): Last year saw the release of their score for the documentary film Hlemmur. Since then, band member Kjartan Sveinsson has soundtracked an upcoming short titled Síðsti Barinn ("The Last Pub"), while the entire band has regrouped to compose music to accompany a short film entitled The Loch Ness Kelpie. The film is a 12½-minute animated piece, developed by Scotland's Red Kite Animation and directed by Iain Gardner, chronicling a young boy's quest to vanquish the famed Kelpie. Gardner reportedly traveled to Iceland to work with the band on the original score. The Loch Ness Kelpie will be screening at the Edinburgh Film Festival this August, but if your frequent flier miles aren't quite there yet, you can check out a one-minute preview of the film on Sigur Rós' website.

Sigur Rós are recording their full-length follow-up to 2005's Takk, according to an update on the band's website. And though bass player Georg Holm writes that the Icelandic musicians "don't know exactly where the album is heading yet," we suspect that their patented formula of epic, orchestral rock might just be too tough to resist. Not that we're complaining, though.
Holm writes, "We have finished recording a few songs but some more things need to be done... We are really just experimenting at this stage. Some of the songs we recorded are old songs, which we had written a while ago... We decided it was time they were recorded." The band expect to finish recording the record this year, and though "nothing is confirmed at this point," there is the possibility of a 2007 release.
Sigur Rós will play two U.S. shows in February. As previously reported, the first is in Miami, where they will accompany a performance of Merce Cunningham's "Split Sides" dance piece. The second is at New York City's Carnegie Hall alongside Lou Reed, Philip Glass, Patti Smith, and Laurie Anderson for a Tibet House benefit. They "will most likely perform just one song" at the latter event. So, like, 15 minutes, then?
Sigur Rós affiliates Amiina have also scheduled U.S. dates beginning in March and continuing into April. Danish label Rumraket recently released the band's "Seoul" single digitally, and the coming weeks will see a vinyl release with a remix from Frakkur, Sigur Rós vocalist Jónsi Birgisson's solo project. Dat was ook een briljant optreden, en wat de sfeer in de tent goed! Ze kwamen drie keer terug om het publiek te bedanken, maar een extra toegift zat er door het tijdsschema niet in...

Optreden heb ik gemist, maar die drie keer dat ze terugkwamen heb ik wel gezien. En daar op gebaseerd vind ik nog altijd jammer dat ik ze niet helemaal gezien heb.

oh ja, je brengt herinneringen in me boven..Werchter.....de avond viel..ik lag samen met een kameraad in het gras net buiten de tent te chillen met een jointje, de sterren werden langzaam zichtbaar..en dan als achtergrondmuziek Sigur Ros...weinig mooiere avonden gehad dan deze.

Iemand anders ook bekend met Óðin's Raven Magic: Live at the Barbican Hall, 21/04/02 een samenwerking tussen Sigur Rós & Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson?
Dat is nog eens genieten van prachtige muziek!
Als het goed is komt het uit op dvd en cd en ik kan er niet op wachten..... voorlopig dus nog even op mp3.

Nee, ik ben er niet bekend mee. Maar ik ben sowieso een beetje huiverig bij projecten van Sigur Ros die buiten de EP's en cd's vallen. Angels of the Universe interesseert me bijvoorbeeld weinig tot niet. Maar Óðin's Raven Magic zou ik toch wel een kans moeten geven denk ik. Zo eens even wat opzoeken op internet.

in an interview in today’s fréttablaðið newspaper, orri revealed that sigur rós will begin recording brand new songs for their fifth lp next week. producer flood, best known for producing albums by bands such as the smashing pumpkins, u2, pj harvey and nick cave, will be joining the band in iceland to record the album. this time around the band will not be recording in their sundlaugin studio, but in a makeshift studio in a house in downtown reykjavík. the band has written the foundations for several songs already. orri told fréttablaðið: “we don’t know where we’re heading yet. at the moment we only have song ideas, which always end up changing once we begin recording them.”

Ik moet hier echt even kwijt dat ik vandaag de limited editie van Heim heb gekocht en dat ik nog nooit zo iets vets heb gezien! Ik heb de dvd net van begin tot einde zitten kijken en wat een geniale dvd is dit. Mijn God! Ge-ni-aal! (Sorry hiervoor.)

Nu ook de dvd Heima gezien (in bezit uiteraard)............ en net als bij hun videoclips maak ik bij deze band graag een uitzondering voor wat betreft het kopen van muziek-dvd's.
Prachtige dvd en zeer de moeite waard om in bezit te hebben.

De liveversie van popplagid alleen al is de moeite om 27 euro eraan te geven. Zelden zoveel emoties gehad van beelden alleen.

Ik ben héél benieuwd naar wat ze in de toekomst nog kunnen brengen. Ik heb zo'n beetje de vrees dat wat nu volgt, gewoon niet meer beter kàn dan wat ze tot nu toe al hebben gemaakt.
Maarja, alleen al het vooruitzicht dat ze daarna normaal gezien wel terug gaan touren doet me hopen dat een nieuw album er zo snel mogelijk aankomt. Want dat optreden op Werchter 2006 was zonder twijfel het mooiste ooit

Een paar dagen terug kwam er een nieuw bericht op de Sigur Rós website, die onder andere het volgende bevatte:
