Het is 2010 inmiddels, en ik zie nog niets van een nieuwe tour, een Mercyful Fate reunie, een nieuw KD album..... King's rug zal nu toch wel enigszins hersteld zijn?

''On November 29th 2010, King was taken to hospital where they discovered several blockages in his arteries. They determined that he had had several heart attacks and that he needed triple-bypass surgery. The surgery was performed successfully. On December 11th 2010 it was announced that he is at home recovering. All his music projects will be on hold for the time being.''

Dit was ik alweer even vergeten. Dit is niet niets, en hij had ook al die hernia.

Einde carrière?

Dat is zeker niet om mee te lachen (ik zit zelf met twee discushernia's in de rug en één in de nek en dat is nog de lichtere variant van een echte hernia, wel pijn genoeg potverdikke). Zijn hartprobleem is ernstig maar overbruggingen zijn - ik durf het haast niet te zeggen - een routine-operatie geworden. Die hartaanvallen zullen wel betekenen dat hij het rustiger aan moet doen, wellicht niet meer touren, maar misschien nog opnemen en hopelijk die langverwachte DVD afwerken. Gezondheid blijft het hoogste goed, dus ik wens hem veel sterkte want als fan heeft hij mij onvergetelijke muziek bezorgd.

Ja, ik denk dat die Mercyful Fate DVD die begin 2011 zou uitkomen nog even op zich laat wachten. Geheel terecht natuurlijk.

Het zou wel ontiegelijk jammer zijn als hij niet meer kan touren, voor mij staat hij nog op mijn múst see lijstje. De vorige keer dat 'ie in Nederland was heb ik 'm gemist.... Ik zie 't echter niet meer gebeuren helaas.

Ik denk dat het ook een combinatie van zijn gezondheid en leeftijd (54 jaar al!) zal zijn: waarom je nog zo live afbeulen. Je bent voor of je bent tegen, maar dergelijke zangprestaties vergen veel kracht en dat zal hij - denk ik - ontberen. Werk maar die DVD af, zou ik zeggen en wie weet wat die mannekens in het wit zeggen: "het is goed, tour nog maar een keer maar dan is het gedaan". Duimen maar. Ik heb het geluk gehad om hem -tig jaren geleden te zien in combinatie met Motörhead en Destruction in de Vooruit in Gent.

Ik neem aan dat hij sinds 2008 niet meer gezongen heeft (met dit soort medische klachten houdt je je niet bezig met je stem op peil houden, toch?), dus het zal al moeite genoeg kosten om z'n stem weer in vorm te krijgen (ook al weer 54, ja), laat staan touren inderdaad.

KING DIAMOND Completes Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Livia Zita, the 26-year-old wife of 54-year-old Danish heavy metal singer King Diamond (real name: Kim Bendix Petersen; MERCYFUL FATE, KING DIAMOND) — who underwent an open-heart triple-bypass surgery last November — has issued the following update:

"Some of you have been asking for an update on King's health, so I thought I'll write what's been going on.

"King has just finished his cardiac rehabilitation program this past Friday, and graduated with flying colors. Thanks to the wonderful people at the rehab center, his exercise regimen helped him gain a lot of muscle, and start on the road of building up good endurance.

"We will start regular exercises now to get the endurance up to nice levels.

"The examinations by his heart surgeon and cardiologist revealed that his health is steadily improving, and they all expect him to feel better than ever, 15 years younger than he really is.

"I am immensely proud of what he has achieved in these short three months, stopped smoking entirely, changed diet and doing regular exercise among other things.

"I cannot say anything certain about when he will be back working on King Diamond-related things, but he is looking forward to finishing the DVDs eventually, and he is most certainly not stopping music.

"I hope this information was helpful. I can honestly say that his progress has been nothing short of amazing. He is the strongest person I know. He would also like to extend his huge gratitude to all of you, for your absolutely amazing support. It has really meant a lot to him.

A video update from King Diamond — which was filmed by Germany's Rock Hard magazine on September 27, 2010 in King's homebase of Frisco, Texas — can be viewed below.

KING DIAMOND's video for the song "Give Me Your Soul" can be viewed below. The band's first clip in 17 years was shot in September 2007 with director Bill Schacht from video company Aestheticom, which has previously worked with DIO, ALICE COOPER and DREAM THEATER, among other artists. Speaking to MTV.com, the group's frontman/namesake — who was suffering from a herniated disc at the time — said about the video shoot, "They limited what I had to do, of course, so I only did one day of shooting for 90 minutes, but just standing there moving a little bit in the full outfit was very difficult. And afterwards, I got one of those sharp attacks of pain that I hadn't had in a month and a half. The only thing I can compare it to is a really super-bad toothache or earache. And afterwards, I was like, 'OK, I'm not ready [to tour] yet.' "

KING DIAMOND received a Grammy nomination in the "Best Metal Performance" category for the track "Never Ending Hill" off the group's latest album, "Give Me Your Soul … Please".

"Give Me Your Soul ... Please" entered the Swedish national chart at position No. 28. The CD also landed at No. 58 on the Danish chart (the second highest new entry on the chart behind VELVET REVOLVER).

"Give Me Your Soul ... Please" sold 4,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 174 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Daarom heeft hij dus altijd schmink op. Heeft 'ie goed.

Dit zou ongelooflijk fantastisch zijn: King Diamond gaat eindelijk weer touren. Het wordt bevestigd op zijn website. Eén van mijn stoutste dromen zou hiermee uitkomen, want hopelijk nog eens met Mercyful Fate!

King tourt voorlopig op z'n gemakje verder. En af en toe gebeurt er ook iets dat het vermelden waard is. Bij de laatste datums de voorbije tour was het zo de gewoonte dat Kerry King even het podium op kwam.
