Die term post-punk moet je heel letterlijk nemen: na de punk. De term mede dankzij Simon Reynolds ingeburgerd geraakt.
Overigens is het altijd het publiek en de critici/recensenten die een etiket (typering) op een band plakken.

We have been called ‘experimental punk’ or ‘the bridge between punk and post-punk’ and played on a United States radio program podcast on ‘female-fronted post-punk’. We don’t like labels like post-punk. Then, you basically get the idea that everything that is more than 5% different from the first three Ramones albums is no longer punk. We love the Ramones, but we don’t think all punk bands should sound like them.
Punk is about individuals thinking for themselves. X-Ray Spex added a saxophone. The Raincoats a violin. Sid Vicious, very differently again, added lots of violins in My Way. John McGeoch of Siouxsie and the Banshees and Kees in our band added an unusual guitar sound.
Overigens vind ik dat ik pas na de punk zou kunnen zijn als alle oorlogen afgelopen zijn, vrouwen niet meer onderdrukt worden en discofiguren zoals John Travolta dood zijn.

Over het nut van correcte labels - in een beheersysteem aanbrengen van metadata - gaf ik (bij presentaties e.d.) altijd twee overduidelijke voorbeelden: asperges, gesorteerd op grootte en kwaliteit brengen meer op; en verhuisdozen: als daarop etiketten staan met aanduidingen als Woonkamer, glas, servieskast/voorzichtig is voor iedereen duidelijk waar alles naartoe moet. Echter, veel "post-"labels - post-punk en post-rock zijn tot containerbegrippen verworden, waarvan niemand meer weet wat ze betekenen.

Hoi, je hebt gelijk dat postpunk inhoudsloos is. Ik zou het niet alleen niet gebruiken voor bands die helemaal geen label willen, maar ook niet voor die, als er dan een label moet zijn, zich geen postpunk maar punk noemen.
