Grappig die hele "I'm Not Burial" status discussie op Facebook/Twitter.
Four Tet post de ene na de andere status waarin hij beweert niet Burial te zijn, terwijl Pitchfork blijkbaar een artikel heeft gepost waarin een Facebook satus stond waarin hij net wel vertelde Burial te zijn.

According to their website, William Bevan Funeral Directors serves the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire areas. Wat is dat toch hier op MuMe om bij bepaalde artiesten hun echte naam als eerste artiestennaam te gebruiken terwijl ze niks onder die naam hebben uitgebracht? Oh wacht, ik weet al wat het is: onzin. Doe gewoon normaal.

Via deze link kan je een hele hoop Four Tet nummers downloaden die hij zelf via Twitter heeft vrijgegeven. Oud nieuws misschien maar ik kwam er zelf pas een week geleden achter. Zit wel wat tof materiaal tussen.

Onder het alias Percussions heeft Four Tet op 28 april twee nieuwe 12" uitgebracht: TEXT029 en TEXT030. Even een korte track-by-track review hier, omdat het naar mijn idee veel betere tracks zijn dan hij op zijn laatste album als Four Tet heeft uitgebracht, en omdat dit soort singles niet op de site mogen.
De A-kant van TEXT029 is mijn favoriet: KHLHI, een track die hij live wel vaker heeft gedraaid de laatste tijd. Een Joy Orbison-achtig housedeuntje wordt beetje bij beetje opgebouwd, langzaam schijnen glimpjes van een sample door, en die sample blijkt een heerlijk vrolijk popdeuntje te zijn dat prima als intermezzo fungeert tussen de dansbare grooves.
B-zijde Sext is eigenlijk van hetzelfde laken een pak, maar een stuk rechtlijniger. Minder melodieus dan de A-kant, maar nog steeds een fijne track. Doet me denken aan de Four Tet remix van Straight and Arrow.
TEXT030, op dezelfde dag uitgekomen als 029 (had dit niet samen op een EP gekund, vraag ik me dan af), is wat kaler, maar mag er ook zeker wezen. A-zijde Ascii Bot is minder dansbaar dan de bovenstaande twee tracks maar wel erg sfeervol, haast dromerig, en de flitsende violen worden mooi bijgestaan door de popsamples in de achtergrond (uit de categorie MGMT of The Naked and Famous).
De knaller van 030 is echter overduidelijk Blatant Water Cannon, waarop echoënde, verwrongen samples het voor deze twee singles typische ritme verzorgen. Verwarrende maar toch genietbare track, die net als de overige nummers duidelijk geënt is op de UK Garage die Hebden al zo effectief mixte op Fabriclive 59.

Over the past 8 years or so we have had, along with Theo Parrish, the honour of playing the monthly residencies at a small basement club in Shoreditch, London with an impeccable sound system. After 20 years of operation, it was time to move on and close the doors on a place that has a lot to answer for in shaping modern club culture. To say this space along with the owner Ade’s singular vision was fundamental in our personal musical formation would be a complete understatement.
On the day of their closing, manager Charlotte asked us if we’d put the system through its paces for the last time that the club would be open to the public. We set about packing the anthems from our respective residencies and on the night once the people were through the doors played 2 records in turn for the rest of the dance. We included tracks of our own and of friends that were made with that place in mind. Records like Daphni - Ye Ye and Four Tet - Pinnacles were made to first be played at Kieran’s nights there, and the Floating Points - Vacuum EP was born out of the CD-R night at the club, and its launch party was the trigger for Sam’s monthly residency.
We set this recording up just before the start of the night and unfortunately it distorts in places, but we make no apology for how joyfully noisy people get! The vibe in the room this night was typical of the club on any given night and we hope this recording captures just a fraction of the spirit of a Plastic People night.
A massive thank you from us to everyone that has come down to the nights over the years and supported our music there. We are truly humbled to have shared the music we love with people at this place, and your energy in turn has influenced the way we make music on an unfathomable scale. We also thank the bosses Charlotte Kepel and Ade Fakile for inviting us to the club and having faith in us over these years! All the best for the future!

Bovenstaande in etappes geluisterd. Zoals ik gewend ben van Four Tets live DJ-sets ligt de nadruk bijna volledig op de trackkeuze en, zeker als buiten het domein van four-on-the-floor-muziek wordt getreden, amper op de mixage. Aan de ene kant is dat jammer, omdat vloeiende overgangen een mix kunnen maken, maar aan de andere kant vind ik het niet erg, omdat de tracks magistraal zijn. Wie mij van tevoren had verteld dat ik ooit Right On for Darkness, Bowls, Fuck the Police en When the Going Is Smooth and Good in één mix zou horen, had ik voor gek verklaard. Bovendien heb ik kennis gemaakt met enkele spannende artiesten, zoals Cláudia, Peter King en Kuniyuki Takahasi.
