Sharkboy - the brainchild of singer-songwriter Avy who formed the band in 1992 in collaboration with 5 Brighton boys. The musically ambitious 6 piece secured a deal to release ‘Matinee’ in 1994 on Nude Records, during the period the label was riding high on the rollercoaster that was Suede’s early success. Reviewers likened Avy’s voice to Nico and the band itself to Mazzy Star, The Triffids and Tindersticks.
The band’s signing was thanks to the presiding influence of Brett Anderson, but they stood well apart (along with the likes of Drugstore and Gallon Drunk) from the engulfing wave of Britpop, anticipating both the Alt Country movement and current art-rock protagonists such as Bat for Lashes.
Developing a dedicated cult following, mystical and deceptively simple musical arrangements framed stories of cinematic love and bleak noir; threading lounge-core retro and country influences into a sparkled, worn glamour. Atmospheric cello and string motifs were woven into the mix by Avy’s then partner, classically trained Adrian Oxaal (who later went on to join the band James.)
Their refusal to follow radio friendly styling ultimately led to the end of the Nude relationship after the release of second album ‘The Valentine Tapes’, but not before travelling to the U.S. to play a few rapturously received shows in New York and Los Angeles in ‘97.
