Episch gaat toch helemaal niet alleen om de lengte?

Nee. Maar hij bedoelt dat je in elke genre wel zogenaamd 'epische nummers' tegenkomt als je alleen maar naar lengte kijkt.

Het begrip episch blijft gewoon lastig en zeker met een topictitel als deze blijft het voor verwarring zorgen.

Nee, daarin val ik stoepkrijt bij - mijn epische disco-bijdrage was een beetje als grap bedoeld (hoewel ik vind dat er wel degelijke epische nummers bij zitten) als reactie op die 'epische hiphop'-opmerking van Misterfool. Ik had er misschien een smiley bij moeten zetten.

Maar stoepkrijt heeft gelijk: er zijn ook epische nummers te vinden in tal van andere muziekstijlen dan alleen maar rock en aanverwante stijlen, waar we vaak als eerste een denken.

Maar het is lastig te definiëren - en de tijdsduur van 6:30 die in dit topic als maatstaf wordt gehanteerd is natuurlijk ook discutabel. Gevoelsmatig zeg ik: een episch nummer heeft een bepaalde opbouw en gelaagdheid, waardoor het stuk verschillen kent in tempo en dynamiek, en soms zelfs is opgedeeld in verschillende segmenten. In die richting gaat het, denk ik. Maar dan zou een nummer als Music van John Miles ook al een 'epic' zijn, hoewel het volgens mij ruim onder de zes minuten blijft.

In jouw omschrijving kan ik me goed vinden, gaucho. Lengte doet er totaal niet toe, maar meestal zie je dat verhalende en/of gelaagde nummers langer dan gemiddeld duren. Maar lengte is zeker geen criterium.

Even ter aanvulling op mijn lijstje: Al die nummers op volgorde zetten wordt me te lastig, maar ik heb wel een onbetwiste nummer 1: The Count of Tuscany

Een goed voorbeeld van een kort episch nummer is L'estasi Dell'oro (The Ecstasy of Gold) van Ennio Morricone.

Dit komt volgens mij tot nu toe het dichtst bij een poging tot definitie van "epische nummers" in dit jarenoude topic.

Ik wou het net opmerken: ik vind dat 'verhalende' ook wel een mooi criterium. dat ik in eerste instantie niet genoemd had in mijn poging. Bij de meeste epische nummers een vrij essentieel gegeven.

Misschien moeten we dit soort termen maar hanteren, in een 'of-of' vorm in plaats van 'en-en'. Ik ben bang dat het leeuwendeel van mijn disco-lijstje dan afvalt...

Valt me nu pas op dat het topic al een paar jaar oud is. Ach, een goeie 'epic' heeft eeuwigheidswaarde, toch?
