Zijn dat Leiber/Stoller composities?
Stand By Me is volgens mij van King/Glick
Stuck In the Middle of You is van Egan/Rafferty

Stand By Me is wel degelijk van Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, al heeft Ben E. King er ook aan meegeschreven.

Arnold Rypens schrijft het toe aan King/Glick en vermeldt tevens dat het nummer is geïnspireerd op een gospel van Rev. H.C. Tindley. Hoewel het nummer wat mij betreft in het lijstje mag blijven staan vind ik het geen opgelegde Leiber/Stoller compositie.

Volgens mij ook. Het staat zelfs te boek als een van de grootste Leiber/Stoller-klassiekers, al meen ik dat King er zelf de belangrijkste hand in had. Maar het hoort wel degelijk in deze lijst.

Het Stealers Wheel-nummer is alleen door hen geproduceerd, maar niet geschreven. Het is, zoals alle SW-nummers, een compositie van Joe Egan en Gerry Rafferty.

Ik heb er net even mijn single van Ben E. King (de heruitgave uit de jaren tachtig) bij gepakt en die vermeldt inderdaad King/Glick als componisten op het Atlantic-label. Ik ben dus toch maar even verder gaan zoeken op internet. En wat blijkt? Leiber en Stoller gebruikten die naam als pseudoniem.

Uit het archief van de New York Times:

"A huge song on the Leiber-Stoller résumé is Ben E. King's ''Stand by Me,'' which hit No. 4 on the Billboard pop charts during its initial 1961 release and reached No. 9 on its 1986 rerelease, timed to the Rob Reiner movie of the same name. Its writers are listed as King-Glick, with Glick standing for ''Elmo Glick,'' a Leiber-Stoller pseudonym. In the ''Hound Dog'' version of how ''Stand by Me'' came about, Stoller recalls ''arriving at our office as Jerry and Ben were working on lyrics for a new song.'' His own contribution to ''Stand by Me,'' he remembers, was the bass line."

En om het nog wat ingewikkelder te maken (en Justus18 gelijk te geven):

"But Stoller's version doesn't line up with two earlier accounts of the song's genesis. In ''Always Magic in the Air,'' Ken Emerson's well-reported history of the New York-based songwriters of the early '60s, the author reports that King sat at the piano and played ''Stand by Me'' at the end of a session, after Leiber and Stoller asked him if he had another song. Not taking a side on the issue of credit, Emerson writes that King drew on old gospel music ''to compose'' the song, but he also refers to ''Stand by Me'' as ''Leiber, Stoller and King's.'' In another recent book, ''1001 Songs: The Great Songs of All Time and the Artists, Stories and Secrets Behind Them,'' by Toby Creswell, King, quoted at length, describes having written ''Stand by Me'' before the session. ''The song more or less wrote itself,'' King said, adding that he had rehearsed it with the Drifters and that ''they liked it very much.''

Dank je wel, maar mijn "wijsheid" komt van Rypens.

Is Jailhouse Rock niet de allergrootste?

Wellicht. Is maar net hoe je het bekijkt. Ik vind bijvoorbeeld Hound dog en Save the last dance for me evengoed all-time classics.

Vandaag maar weer eens een ander uitgangspunt: het beste nummer dat in een live-versie een hit werd.
