Wim De Craene verkocht amper 500 exemplaren (je leest het goed)
van de single Rozane in Vlaanderen. Nochtans grijsgedraaid op de radio.
Hij was gedurende de jaren 70 zwaar ondergewaardeerd (don't blame
de Nederlanders, in Vlaanderen was het zomogelijk nog erger).

Daarom probeerde hij het in de jaren 80 achtereenvolgens
als rocker, deed hij mee aan Eurosong en ging uiteindelijk mainstream.
Gelukkig bleef zijn talent altijd intact, maar het was schrijnend
om hem te zien ploeteren voor een greintje erkenning.

In 1990 benam Wim zichzelf van het leven.

Tot op heden is er van deze schitterende liedjesmaker
(want hij schreef ze allemaal zelf) nog geen enkele fatsoenlijke
CD box verschenen met integraal werk. Ik heb in de loop der jaren
bijna alles van hem op CD bij elkaar gespaard via budget verzamelaars.

Pikant detail: in de vroege jaren 70 gaat Wim even in de leer
bij die niet onbekende noorderbuur Ramses Shaffy, waarnaar
hij een paar jaar later zijn zoon zou noemen (die van het lied Tim).

@Dazzler , wat mij wel opvalt bij Wim De Craene is zijn vrijwel accentloze Nederlandse uitspraak. Van Vlaams is volgens mij geen sprake. Namen ze hem dat misschien kwalijk in zijn land ? Ik gis maar wat , want zowel tekstueel als muzikaal heeft De Craene het uitstekend voor elkaar en dat in een tijd waarin er duidelijk behoefte was aan dit soort repertoire. Althans in Nederland....

Meerdere factoren spelen een rol: Wim heeft ook stoutere liedjes
waarin je hem tekstueel aardig met Robert Long kan vergelijken.
Dat lag in het brave, katholieke Vlaanderen wat moeilijker.

Hij zat ook niet bij Philips die toen 80% van de kleinkunst
in Vlaanderen uitbrachten en promootten. En tenslotte was hij zelf
nogal een perfectionist: niet zo gauw tevreden met zichzelf en zijn werk.

Vlaamse kleinkunstartiesten werden in de jaren 70
vaak niet ernstig genomen door de Vlaamse persmuskieten.
Die hoorden liever (Frans) chanson. De massa ging voor Tura en Marva.
Zat je niet bij Philips, dan is de kans groot dat je werk vandaag
nog steeds wacht op een verdiende heruitgave op CD.

Maar de spelleider fluister mij in dat dit allemaal nogal off topic is.

Ach, zit wel wat in; ik vind 'm wel lekker, maar het hoort niet tot mijn all-time favourites....
