Dit begint zolangzamerhand aardig wat trekjes te krijgen van de beruchte Watts Riots in Los Angeles in 1965 (of die van 1992 for that matter)

Natuurlijk, je kunt er allerlei grappen over maken en liedjes bij afspelen (Anarchy in the UK, There's a riot going on, London calling, I fought the law etc.), maar voor sommige independent labels betekent dit een hele klap, zo blijkt uit deze update van Pitchfork (even doorklikken op de link als je het hele verhaal wilt lezen).
Sony zelf schijnt er wat geluidsdragers betreft geen last van te hebben, maar vooral de labels die worden gedistribueerd door PIAS zijn er wél door getroffen. In een aantal gevallen is hun gehele voorraad vernietigd en kunnen ze tijdelijk niet leveren. Een periode waarin ze dus zonder inkomsten zitten, terwijl hun personeel en huur wel moet worden doorbetaald. En natuurlijk moet er nieuwe voorraad aangemaakt worden.

Pitchfork spoke with Beggars chairman Martin Mills earlier today, who stated that the label had lost their entire UK stock-- 750,000 copies in all-- to the fire. Mills said that he estimates it'll take the label 10 days to replace the CDs and at least three months to replace their vinyl stock, and that Beggars expects to recoup manufacturing costs through insurance (other labels' stock could very well be covered as well, since PIAS has insurance too).
Ik heb er niet zoveel verstand van, maar ik kan me voorstellen dat dit verzekeringstechnisch nog best lastig ligt - in hoeverre is hier sprake van een onvoorziene omstandigheid die vergelijkbaar is met een natuurramp of iets dergelijks? Best kans dat er verzekeringsmaatschappijen zijn die zich er toch onderuit proberen te wurmen.
Aanvulling: er is zelfs al een inzamelingsactie op gang voor de getroffen labels, lees ik net: label love.

Zulks is niet verzekerd. Ook bij natuurrampen doen verzekeraars moeilijk. Vaak is het de overheid die dan bijspringt. Ik hoor zojuist op de radio dat Cameron aankondigt kleine middenstanders te zullen bijstaan.

Schade ten gevolge van rellen en/of brand vallen bijna altijd onder de dekking. Natuurrampen is weer heel iets anders en is vaak uitgesloten. In NL in ieder geval.

Als de verzekeringsmaatschappijen al betalen, zullen ze inderdaad alleen de waarde, zeg kostprijs van de voorraad vergoeden.
Maar een label moet ook omzet maken, en meerwaarde halen uit verkoop; o.a. alleen alom personeel, kosten, huur e.d. te kunnen betalen.
Maar het betekent ook geen geld voor nieuwe releases.
Als de hele voorraad is verbrand is er geen omzet. Betwijfel of ze daat voor zijn verzekerd.
Hoop dat dit niet de nekslag zal betekenen voor vele van die labeltjes die door bijvoorbeeld PIAS worden gedistribueerd.
Zou toch erg zijn als de grijp en graai cultuur de onafhankelijke muziekscene de das om doet

Inderdaad, Oldfart, het zou te gek voor woorden zijn dat onafhankelijke labels het dupe zouden worden van de rellen in Engeland, hoe erg deze ook zijn. De grootte bedrijven redden zich wel over het algemeen, maar voor de kleine middenstander gelden andere wetten.
