Ik was gisteren op een hiphopfeestje en daar werden na afloop nogal veel klassieke hiphopnummers gedraaid die me erg bevielen. Het ging me te ver om de DJs alles op te laten schrijven, maar in ieder geval kwam The Breaks van Kurtis Blow langs, maar ook dingen als Roots Manuva en Remember Me van Blue Boy.

Maar goed, ik vroeg me af wat nog meer klassiekers zijn, want ik wil er eigenlijk wel meer van leren kennen. En buitenbeentjes als die van Blueboy (dat ik eigenlijk nooit als hiphopnummer zag) mogen natuurlijk ook genoemd worden.

Hou oude praten we dan? Is 92-96 ook oldschool?

Tuurlijk niet .

Ik dacht meer aan begin jaren '80. Maar als je tips hebt, zet ze gerust neer. Hoe meer tips hoe beter.

Roots Manuva lijkt me ook niet begin jaren '80.

Dan zit je echt bij Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, Doug E. Fresh, UTFO, Audio Two, Cold Crush Brothers, Mantronix.

Nee, dat RM-nummer is uit 2000 ofzo. Maar ik zal die namen die je noemt eens uitproberen (alhoewel ik Grandmaster Flash en Mantronix al wel een beetje ken). Nog specifieke releases die de moeite waard zijn?

Met ´The Breaks´ van Kurtis Blow heb je in mijn ogen wel een van de allerbeste uit de oldschool. Maxisingle komt bij mij nog regelmatig uit de kast.

Ik zal mijn kast eens nakijken, dan maak ik een lijstje. Indertijd bestond er nogal een onderscheid tussen Electric Boogie en Rap. Van Electric Boogie staat veel op de gelijknamige 5-delige LP reeks.

Kijk, kijk, de tips stromen binnen. Dat wordt weer een dagje huiswerk maken overslaan.

Vind ik niet écht oldschool. Dit zegt allmusic er trouwens over:

Old School Rap is the style of the very first rap artists who emerged from New York City in the late '70s and early '80s. Old school is easily identified by its relatively simple raps -- most lines take up approximately equal amounts of time, and the rhythms of the language rarely twisted around the beats of the song. The cadences usually fell squarely on the beat, and when they didn't, they wouldn't stray for long, returning to the original pattern for quick resolution. The emphasis was not on lyrical technique, but simply on good times -- aside from the socially conscious material of Grandmaster Flash, which greatly expanded rap's horizons, most old school rap had the fun, playful flavor of the block parties and dances at which it was born. De helft van jouw lijstje ken ik niet eens.

(Vind Rockit trouwens ook niet echt hip-hop).

Het meeste heb ik opgepikt uit de soulshow van Ferry Maat destijds. Rockit had ik ertussen gezet als Electric Boogie. Is geen Hiphop inderdaad, maar verder is alles van mijn lijstje ook van vóór de tijd dat HipHop als term bestond. Die hoorde ik voor het eerst in het nummer:

Ik weet nog dat ik dat ik dat een moeilijk te omschijven plaat vond, want het was rap-style maar er werd niet gerapt .. hiphop dus

Overigens dank voor jouw lijst ook - wat ik ken (ongeveer de helft) is prima. Ga ik zeker nog wat uit 'ontdekken'

Ik ga ook even achter Kos' Kostelijke Oldschool Klassiekers aan want ik ken de helft niet.

Ik zit net nog heel wat goede te bedenken die ik was vergeten, maar die komen later wel.

Bereid je iig vast voor op heel veel dingen die je kent van latere tracks.

Sommigen leggen de grens voor old skool waar new skool begint. Het gaat dan eigenlijk meer over imago, geen sportauto's enzo, niet opscheppen over geld enzo (waar gaat Rapper's Delight eigenlijk over ). Waar leggen jullie de grens? Misschien is het handiger om daar afspraken over te maken om misverstanden uit de weg te gaan...

Stoere praat, geld, vrouwen .

Dat is zo! En dus daarom alleen al gaat dàt inhoudelijk onderscheid tussen old en new skool niet op. Maar ik mag me er wel van vergewissen (vreemd woord overigens) dat the Sugarhill Gang zo'n beetje alleen stonden met dit staaltje opscheppoëzie. Misschien de uitzondering die de regel bevestigt... Andere teksten waren toch meer down to (ghetto)earth.
