* Maak een genummerde top 10-15-20-25-30 van platen uit de jaren '50 (en plaats deze in dit topic).
* De puntentelling is per 2016 veranderd en nu als volgt:
#1: 100 punten, #2: 90 punten (…) [-5] (…) #5: 75 punten (…) [-3] (…) #20: 30 punten (…) [-1] (…) #30: 20 punten
* De albums moeten óf hier op musicmeter aangegeven staan als 1950-1959 (ongeacht het type album of het materiaal dat erop staat) óf uitsluitend(!) opnames bevatten die uit de jaren '50 stammen (naar eigen inzicht!).
* Ieder type album is toegestaan, dus ook EP’s en verzamelaars. De kans dat zo’n album medestanders vindt is daarentegen erg twijfelachtig.
* Noteren gaat als volgt:

Heb voor mezelf een lijstje gemaakt met essentiële 50's-platen die me zouden moeten liggen. Die ga ik chronologisch afwerken. Van de albums die ik al beoordeeld hebben zal ik enkele nummertjes ter opfrissing draaien. De (twintig) nog niet beoordeelde albums - sommigen al eerder beluisterd, sommigen nog nooit - zullen goed de aandacht krijgen. Zojuist weer even Yma Sumac (Voice of the Xtabay) en Thelonious Monk gehoord (Genius of Modern Music) uit respectievelijk 1950 en 1951. Nu een flinke stap in de tijd met een van de grootste klassiekers van de jaren '50: In the Wee Small Hours.
Veel muziek die geschikt is om ondertussen bij te studeren / kleine taakjes te doen, dus uitstekend geschikt voor de komende weken. Hopelijk is 11 dagen genoeg tijd om alle albums goed te leren kennen. Ik heb in ieder geval wel zin in een een kleine twee weken 50's, vooral omdat ik er nog veel te ontdekken heb!

Franck Maudit, met Jack Teagarden, Lavern Baker en Barney Kessel heb ik toch drie jazz platen in mijn lijst. En Teunis, er is heel wat meer rock 'n' roll opgenomen als alleen Elvis, zoals ook wel uit mijn lijst blijkt. Jazz is niet echt mijn ding, of het moet jazz gitaar zijn. Dat klinkt vaak wel smakelijk.

.Overigens verbaasd het me dat niemand dit album nog genoemd heeft terwijl ik het debuut wel al een paar keer voorbij heb zien komen. Dit is toch de 'big bang' van de popmuziek zoals iemand dat meer dan tien jaar geleden zo mooi zei.

Toen die verscheen vond ik deze Elvis niet meer zo leuk.
Maar dat is lijkt mij Elvis zijn beste worp.

Da's van die muzak voor smart-asses (met een baret en shades op de kop) die dat alleen draaien om bij de babes te scoren.
Elvis daarentegen was op het laatst een obese junk die beter in zijn eigen ghetto had kunnen blijven ipv naar Las Vegas te gaan - wat een afknapper als je dat vergelijkt met die (film)beelden uit zijn soldatentijd.

Kijk, an sich kan dat bij wijlen nerveuze gejengel -dat volgens sommigen dan ook nog eens voor muziek moet doorgaan- me uiteraard gestolen worden. Maar wanneer je -zoals ik- door kinderen wordt nageroepen met 'kijk mama, daar loopt Quasimodo!' zijn alle tactieken die een vrouwmens ertoe brengen mijn bed te warmen toegelaten.

Ah, 'The Sun Sessions' had eigenlijk in mijn lijstje gemoeten. Ik heb eigenlijk alleen op releases uit de jaren '50 gezocht. Om ook nog eens door latere compilaties te spitten was me een beetje te veel.
Ik snap Teunnis berichtje wel dat het debuut van Elvis matig zou zijn. 60 jaar na datum klinkt die vroege rock 'n roll toch niet meer zo spannend en, dare I say it, soms zelfs een beetje eenheidsworst. Dat geldt niet alleen voor Elvis maar alle rock 'n roll uit die tijd. Bij mij viel het Elvis-kwartje pas toen ik zijn comeback platen begon te luisteren. Daarna kon ik ook zijn jaren '50 werk meer apprecieren. Het hielp uiteraard ook dat ik me begon te verdiepen in de achtergrond van Elvis (boeken, films) en de tijdsperiode waarin Elvis zijn eerste platen uitbracht. Als ik de vroege rock 'n roll in zijn context luister - en dan zou je een plaat uit 1956 moeten vergelijken met andere muziek die toen populair was, en even niet moeten denken aan de geschiedenis die daarna komt - dan kan ik er meer plezier uithalen. Wat dat betreft is die vroege rock 'n roll toch voor mij meer gedateerd dan blues uit die tijd, dat ook al snel op mij kan overkomen als eenheidsworst, maar waarbij ik minder drang naar context voel.

Wat betreft Elvis ben ik dit zeker met je eens maar ik vind andere rock 'n roll (Chuck Berry / Little Richard bijv.) ook vandaag de dag nog verrassend fris klinken.60 jaar na datum klinkt die vroege rock 'n roll toch niet meer zo spannend en, dare I say it, soms zelfs een beetje eenheidsworst.
