Dan heb je wel gelijk alles, is het idee. Alleen.... Ga je dan ook alles luisteren? Sommige platen ken je inmiddels toch van buiten? En sommige platen zijn toch ook maar zo-zo?

Was de box gevuld met alleen demo's, live-opnamen en rariteiten, dan was het interessanter geweest.

De Al Stewart Top 563 aller tijden.
Hier ziet de bescheiden luisteraar door de bomen het bos niet meer.
En dus lijkt mij dit veel te veel van het goede.

Ik geloof dat ik alle albums van Stewart wel heb, wat kan ik nog met dit monster.
Ik had het persoonlijk leuker gevonden als Stewart, voor het eerst in 14 jaar, weer eens met nieuw plaatwerk op de proppen zou zijn gekomen.

Al treed nog wel op en maakt een fitte indruk. Zou inderdaad mooi zijn als hij weer wat nieuws fabriceerd.
Maar ja, zoals veel oudere artiesten is de afweging of het nog wel verkoopt meer dan ooit aanwezig.
Al Stewart heeft gerust nog wel een fanbase, maar het grote publiek is vrees ik alleen geïnteresseerd in het klassieke spul.
Grote labels nemen waarschijnlijk die gok niet. Onder eigen beheer misschien.
Kan natuurlijk ook zijn dat hij het welletjes vind en met live spelen genoeg voldoening heeft.
Zijn oevre is wat dat betreft interessant genoeg.

Intussen is er wel een dubbel-cd-heruitgave van Year of the Cat uitgegeven. Dus voor de fan is er genoeg te sparen.

Ik houd altijd mijn ogen open voor interessante lp-(re)-releases van Al.

Een dubbel-lp met bijvoorbeeld BBC-opnamen (zoals On Air van Queen), bijvoorbeeld.

Wie weet gaat Al ook wel naar Bandcamp.

Trouwens, Buddy Guy - The Blues Don't Lie (2022) - MusicMeter.nl de goede oude Buddy Guy, boven de 80, heeft ook nog weer gewoon nieuw werk. Het kan wel.

Je kunt je inderdaad afvragen wie er blij wordt van deze box. Ik beschouw mezelf als en serieus fan van Al Stewart, met een slordige twintig reguliere albums in mijn bezit, compilaties niet meegerekend. Maar die ga ik natuurlijk niet allemaal opnieuw kopen. En iemand die weinig tot niets van Al Stewart heeft, zie ik zo'n box niet meteen aanschaffen.
Dat is het lastige van oeuvre-omvattende verzamelboxen: de echte fan heeft het merendeel al en 'instappers' beginnen hier niet aan. Ik ben er om die redenen voorstander van om zulke sets op te splitsen in het nog niet eerder verkrijgbare materiaal en de reguliere albums. En die laatste dan liefst afzonderlijk, want dan kun je nog overwegen om er één of enkele bij te kopen.

Het is wel een alles-omvattende set, zeg. Inclusief losse vroege singles, demo's en live-opnamen op de laatste paar schijfjes. Maar na vijf keer Electric Los Angeles sunset geloof ik het wel...

Het net eerder uitgebrachte materiaal is toch al gauw 18 cd's:

Een boxje met alleen die 18 cd's zou inderdaad een interessantere box zijn.

Ik ben trouwens ook een serieuze fan. Al 30+ jaar, maar verder dan de reguliere platen ben ik nooit gekomen. Op discogs zie ik veel cd-r's die door Al Stewart's fanclub zijn uitgebracht.
Ik ben eerlijk gezegd van geen enkele fanclub lid geweest, omdat ik kriebels krijg van fanclub-leden (heel kort van Marillion en Saga lid geweest, niets voor mij dat collectieve gedoe, doe mij maar in mijn eentje fan zijn).

Ik zit nu even in Queen/Magnum etc. fase, maar misschien dat ik binnenkort weer eens een Al Stewart-fase ga hebben.

Buddy Guy bewijst het inderdaad wel en hij is natuurlijk niet de enige.
In dat kader vermoed ik dat bluesmuziek een oneindige revival door maakt.
Buddy Guy is ook zo'n typische senior die maar niet van wijken weet en misschien is zijn stijl ook wat beter te verkopen dan de intellectuele insteek van Al Stewart, die laten we eerlijk zijn commercieel al heel lang zijn beste tijd gehad heeft.
Zomaar een gedachtengang hoor.

Offtopic, vind ik de laatste Bonnie Raiit ook erg sterk, om maar even een vrouw te noemen.

On topic: deze box gaat nooit gereviewd worden door een van ons. Maar vond toch dat ik het op de site moest plaatsen. Ik had alleen echt geen tijd en zin, om per nummer aan te geven om welke versie het gaat. Daarvoor zullen mensen dan toch even discogs of een andere site moeten raadplegen.

Dat laatste kan ik me voorstellen. Naast Discogs geeft ook SuperDeluxeEdition een gedetailleerd overzicht van wat er in deze box te vinden is. Inclusief posters, prints en een koffietafelboek van maar liefst 160 pagina's. Ongetwijfeld prachtig uitgevoerd (alleen al de cover is een kunstwerk op zich), en om die reden begrijpelijkerwijs beperkt tot een oplage van in totaal 2000 stuks. Prijzen variëren nogal, van zo'n 400 (bij jpc.de) tot ruim 600 euro. Maar zoals gezegd, ik pas.

Ik vermoed overigens dat deze set niet op vinyl gaat verschijnen...

Dan kan je de eindprijs x5 doen. Dan wordt zo'n boxset 2000 tot 3000 euro.
En dan nog de grondstoffen, dat kan nu echt niet meer. Het kopen van nieuw vinyl, hoe leuk en nostalgisch het ook is, is op dit moment echt (voor mij) een doodzonde. (tenzij recycled vinyl, maar dat loopt nog niet echt op rolletjes).

Ben een zeer grote fan van Al, maar dit gaat veel te ver. Heb al zijn reguliere werk, en zelfs de Unreleased Masters, Volume 1 t/m 3. Drie CD's met outtakes en demo's, die hij tijdens concerten verkocht. Het merendeel van die nummers zijn ook op deze box terug te vinden.

Hij treedt nog regelmatig op, deze maand in de VS. Komt hopelijk nog eens naar ons landje. En een nieuw album zou ik zeer toejuichen. Waarom niet? Zijn laatste albums waren allemaal prachtig en behoren tot zijn beste werken (behalve natuurlijk Down in the Cellar).

Te oud? Ben je gek: naast de hierboven genoemde Buddy Guy en Bonnie Raitt maakten onder anderen Jackson Browne, Janis Ian, Van Morrison en David Crosby fraaie muziek.

Het hangt een beetje van het genre af, maar natuurlijk is Al niet te oud. In zijn genre - folkrock-achtige pop - kun je nog jarenlang mee, zie de bovengenoemde voorbeelden. Hamvraag is natuurlijk of de inspiratie al dan niet op is, dat is altijd afwachten. Op basis van recente live-videos constateer ik in elk geval dat hij nog tamelijk goed bij stem is. Zal ook wel komen omdat je je stem met zijn repertoire niet hoeft te forceren, dat is mooi meegenomen.

Wat is er overigens mis met Down in the cellar? Niet zijn absolute hoogtepunt, maar zo slecht is dat album toch niet? Vond het wel een mooi thematisch album, met vooral ook fijn gitaarwerk.

Deep Purple gaat, overigens zeer verdienstelijk, ook door tot het bittere einde. Er zit geen eindleeftijd op het maken van muziek.
Wat wel kan is, maar ik weet niet of die vraag ooit aan hem is gesteld, dat Stewart, net als bijvoorbeeld Billy Joel, zijn oeuvre groot en goed genoeg vindt en dat een uitbreiding niet meer nodig is. Dat hij ook niet meer het gevoel heeft relevante nieuwe songs te (kunnen) schrijven en dat hij het dus laat bij alles wat er is verschenen.

Dat hij met deze compilatie kan zeggen dat er niet meer hoeft te worden gezocht naar individuele albums maar dat alles hier in zit.
Ik heb nogal wat moeite gedaan trouwens om 24 Carrots en Time passages te vinden voor normale bedragen!

Maar "de lol van het verzamelen" gaat er met zo'n compilatie ook wel van af, laten we eerlijk zijn.

NB: ik zie op Amazon.de dat je in de "original album series" 2 x 5 albums kunt kopen voor 2 x € 12,99.
Dus 10 Al Stewart albums voor 26 euro

Deze compilatie is € 594,53.

Ik vind zo een boxset kopen, ook een beetje lui verzamelen, zeg maar.

Ik heb één keer zo een grote box gekocht, van The Allman Brothers (500 euro), maar dat doe ik dus nooit meer.

...mooie box met geremasterde versies van de originele albums die in mijn oren voller en warmer klinken, alleen daarom al voor mij de moeite waard...
