Supergave ProgRock-band met melodie en af en toe wat metal-elementen. Meester-muzikaal-brein Steven Wilson heeft Porcupine Tree al in 1987 opgericht. Was eerst dus een soort van soloband. Later kwamen er echte bandleden bij. Ik wacht nu met smart tot de re-release in surround sound van Stupid Dream door de post bezorgd wordt. Schitterend album is dat. Andere meesterwerken zijn: In Absentia, Deadwing, Signify, Lightbulb Sun, Up the Downstair en Recordings (beste verzameling van B-nummers ooit gehoord!).

Ik zie dat het voorprogramma van hun concert 27 september in Paradiso Paatos is. Nu weet ik zeker dat ik ga

voor hen die komende weken van plan zijn om één of meerdere optredens van Porcupine Tree te bezoeken heeft de website een kleine mededeling van huishoudelijke aard:

"Porcupine Tree will embark on their only 2006 tour later this week. The format of the show this time around will be a little different, with half the show dedicated to material from the new live DVD "Arriving Somewhere....", but the other half being brand new, as yet unrecorded material, something that will allow these works in progress to evolve as the tour goes on.

In view of the fact that we live in the age of file sharing and download culture, we are asking for consideration from all show attendees in *not* attempting to record the show in any way. While the band try to discourage taping of its shows, we do acknowledge that there are those fans who like to document and share PT live performances, and as such we have a fairly liberal policy with trading of recordings among the PT fan community, as long as no money is exchanged between parties. But in this case we hope that fans will understand our feeling that people should experience this new music for the first time in performance, and not in the form of unauthorised audience recordings. It's one thing to hear a substandard live recording of a piece already familiar, but quite another to hear something new for the first time in such poor circumstances, so if you are unable to get along to a show this time, please be patient and wait for the album versions!

Now the ugly part...as there are bound to be some fans who even after reading this will feel compelled to record the show, we regret that there will be a greater effort made to stop illegal recording on this tour, and a zero tolerance policy as regards anyone found doing so. If anyone is discovered recording a show their recording media will be confiscated, and they will be escorted from the venue, missing the rest of the show with no refund forthcoming. We therefore ask anyone that had planned to tape these shows to reconsider in deference to the band's feelings on this matter, and your own enjoyment of the show.

We really do appreciate your understanding and cooperation on this. This is quite an exciting experiment for us and we look forward to seeing you on the tour!"

De DVD-video (Arriving Somewhere...) heb ik inmiddels binnen: super goede live muziek en ook het geluid van deze dvd is veel beter dan op andere muziek dvd-video's. Vooral in dts (surround sound) klinkt het weergaloos.
Ik heb een limited edition-versie (van de in totaal 2000). Dat stelt qua extra's niet zoveel voor. De extra's zijn een paar foto-briefkaarten en een sticker op de dvd met het nummer van mijn limited edition versie. In mijn geval: 1732. Maar goed, belangrijker is dat het een schitterende dvd-video is.

Op PT-website staat het volgende:
Roadrunner Records and Atlantic USA have officially announced the release of the new Porcupine Tree album "Fear of a Blank Planet" in mid April. The album features six (mostly lengthy) tracks, and is the band’s most ambitious and cohesive work to date. Much of it was debuted last year on tour to a rapturous response from fans.

The lyrical content of the song-cycle on the album is a 21st century cocktail of MTV, sex, prescription drugs, video games, the internet, terminal boredom, and subsequent escape.

ff een vraagje: Waarom staat Futile niet op de site? Ik meen mij toch te herinneren dat ie er ooit wel op stond. Of mag het niet omdat het een download album is ofzo?

Futile staat wel op de site, nl. als bonus track van In Absentia. Op bijvoorbeeld mijn dvd-audio staat-ie en ik ben er erg blij mee.

Ja maar dat is maar 1 track, het meeste bonusmateriaal van het mini-album Futile uit 2003 staat er niet

futile is nooit officieel uitgebracht, daarom denk ik. Het staat op de PT site ook onder download albums

Sterker nog, ze gaan binnenkort op Tournee, zeer grote kans dat ze ook naar nederland komen!!!

die kans is wel heel groot , Nederland was trouwens het eerste land waar bij PT optrad buiten het verenigd koninkrijk geloof ik.

Joining a small band of Media representatives from New York City, our own Ken Pierce was priveleged to listen to the new Porcupine Tree CD; a crunching Progressive Rock epic entitled Fear Of A Blank Planet. The album will hit the streets on April 24, 2007 and should surprise some of his fans. Founder and creative Mastermind Steven Wilson was present at the listening and told the group that the album was one long contiguous piece of music. It runs approximately fifty minutes in length, and while segmented with various movements, it still becomes part of the larger whole. Wilson mused that he opted against making the whole thing one 80 minute song and went with 50 just like in the good old days of Prog music. We enjoyed the 5.1 mix of the recording in one of the rooms of Legacy Studios and were treated to the piece in surround sound as well. It is a very intense piece of music at times with thundering drums and riffs that will impress any guitar player and yet when it slows down it is passionate and sublte in the truest sense. I asked Wilson if he felt that this was among the heaviest material he has delivered to date and he replied "yes, it might very well be". The long time fans of the Progressive Rock genius will not be disappointed in the album for while it is heavier than they might expect there is also a multitude of musical valleys and time signature changes that they have come to appreciate over the course of the bands career. From here, Wilson would head off to Abbey Road studios to repeat the listening process over there. He joked when we began and said "what we are going to hear, no what YOU are going to hear, since I have been doing this for three months aleady, is the new recording, and I will come back when its done". When Wilson returned to the studio room he was met with applause and whistles and he cracked a casual smile and politely thanked us for being part of the evening. We were not provided with any track-listing information or the titles for the segments under the piece, but regardless I look forward to this albums release and feel it will snare an even larger audience for this well-deserving band.
