Haar hitsingles (van een jaar of 10/15 geleden of hoe lang zou het zijn?) ben ik eigenlijk pas veel later gaan waarderen, maar luister ik ook nu nog af en toe. Week 18 van 2020 waar Phoebe en Abbie op 1 en 2 staan, dat kan zomaar een aantal weken zo blijven alleen de volgorde durf ik niet te voorspellen. Maar echte concurrentie voor die 2 plaatsen is er nog niet. Overigens is er van Abbie nu wel een clip gemaakt, toen die binnenkwam nog niet.
Ondanks dat wel 7 binnenkomers.
Secret Shame uit North Carolina scoorde vorig jaar top 5 bij mij met Calm, of de nieuwe dat gaat halen valt te bezien. Het doet me erg aan The Cure denken, dat ik natuurlijk helemaal niet erg.
Bryde verdwijnt met haar vorige en komt met de nieuwe alweer binnen op bijna de hoogste positie die de vorige haalde. Het is ook gewoon een lekker pop/rock/singer-songwriter liedje.
Rosie Tucker scoorde vorig jaar al een hitje bij mij en nu de opvolger; die begint een beetje zoals Reunion's klassieker Life is a Rock... maar na anderhalve minuut komt wel de nodige variatie.
Painted Zeros is geen band maar een zangeres uit Brooklyn leer ik via Get in Her Ears.Het begint vergelijkbaar met oa 10.000 Maniacs of Sundays maar tegen het eind wordt toch even wat steviger aangezet. Gaat nog groeien, weet ik vrijwel zeker.
Maita scoorde rond de laatste jaarwisseling ook een bijna top 20 bij mij, kijken of dat met de nieuwe wel gaat lukken. De titel is intrigerend genoeg, de video opgenomen tijdens de lockdown.
Sharaya Summers scoorde vooral in 2018 heel goed bij mij, in 2019 was ze vooral bezig met moeder worden en nu is ze er week. De vorige staat nog net in m'n lijst; de nieuwe is er nu en lijkt op eerste (paar keer) gehoor weer wat dichter bij de stijl die ik goed vind van haar. Wat zweverige singer-songwriterpop.
Van Odina zag ik op de site 'record of the day' het zgn singlehoesje en dacht: dat wil ik goed vinden. Gelukkig blijkt de muziek in het verlengde van bv Laura Marling, Phoebe Bridgers en Julien Baker te liggen dus dat lukte ook nog, mag nog wel groeien.

Week 18
- Deze week is mijn top 2 intact gebleven. Ook is het vermelden waard dat mijn nummer 10 al voor de derde week rustig op nummer 10 blijft. Heerlijk nummer ook, gaat inderdaad niet gauw vervelen. Verder kwam deze week weinig muziek uit wat in aanmerking kwam voor deze lijst. Wel heb ik twee nieuwe binnenkomers die ik nu ga introduceren. Allereerst een nieuwe single van YUNGBLUD. Ik moet wel eerlijk zeggen dat ik niet zo'n fan ben van het imago en de performance van hem, maar hij levert af en toe wel wat leuk werk. Je moet hem alleen wel heel erg doseren. Toch vind ik Weird! een erg leuk nummer.

- Ten tweede heeft Maya Hawke een nieuwe single. Haar eerdere By Myself is mij erg goed bevallen. Ook Coverage klinkt weer erg goed, met die mooie stem van haar. Wat ook erg leuk is dat de clip nu met de crisis opgenomen is in huize Hawke. Met rollen voor verschillende broers en zussen en geregisseerd door haar vader, Ethan Hawke.

Ralphy's Potential Possibilities (Bubbling Under)

S10 houdt het goed vol aan de top van mijn lijst en staat alweer voor de vierde week op 1. Misschien komt daar volgende week verandering in, want het nieuwe album van The Strokes begint langzaam in te dalen en mijn hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer klopt ook direct keihard op de deur: Night van Kelly Lee Owens, spanning én ontspanning in één elektronische song. Verder is mijn hitlijst wat statisch deze week, maar voor volgende week verwacht ik weer grotere verschuivingen, want de tipparade is goed gevuld.

Een artiest die heel lang uit de spotlights is verdwenen na zijn indrukwekkend debuutplaat is weer terug. Woodkid heeft een nieuwe single met de bescheiden titel Goliath. Net zo bombastisch als we van hem kennen, maar toch behoorlijk anders. Zwaarder en beklemmender vooral. Uiteraard ook weer vergezeld dor een indrukwekkende videoclip.

Ik kon gemakkelijk een top 30 of 40 opstellen maar ik ga het houden op 20. Alucinao is waarschijnlijk het beste nummer van dit jaar en blijft dus gemakkelijk op 1. Was wat moeilijk om verschuivingen te doen als meeste nummers allemaal wel recent zijn en toch kwaliteit zijn, toch een aantal nieuwkomers en verschuivingen in mijn lijst. Het is me ook net opgevallen dat mijn lijst wel echt overal ter wereld is, gelukkig kan ik nog een beetje reizen met muziek.

Nieuw:
- Silent Opera: Had vorige week enkel voor het recentste nummer gekozen van Long Arm maar deze is ook van dit jaar en aangezien het nergens vermeld was in dit topic heb ik het toch maar in top gezet. Natuurlijk ook omdat het gewoon een geniaal nummer is met vooral een prachtig einde dankzij de piano.
- Pretty Lady: Verwondert dat dit nummer hier nog niet langs gekomen of is iedereen Tash Sultana vergeten? Het is geen Jungle maar dit nummer is toch ook echt wel goed, zeker na meerdere luisterbeurten.
- Clothing: Glass museum is blijkbaar een Belgische band, ik weet eigenlijk niks van deze groep, maar wat ik wel weet is dat dit nummer kwaliteit is. Het is weer zo'n prachtige huwelijk tussen jazz en electronica.
- Nguy Na Ngai: Wel, ik ben momenteel in Afrika, dus kan ik er ook best wat Afrikaanse muziek in mijn lijst doen. Deze Congolese groep heeft me wel helemaal te pakken met dit nummer.
- Bad Times are Good Times: Ook dit was me totaal onbekend tot een paar dagen geleden, maar dit nummer van deze Canadese kan me zeker bekoren. Een prachtig layback nummer.

Aero's Forty-in-the-Bag Week 18:

Weer genoeg onstuimigheid in de single verzameling. De weirdo-pop van Robovine heeft me helemaal ingepalmd. Russisch trots Auktyon komt hoog binnen met een heerlijk post-jazzy rock nummer en ook James Blake weet me weer eens te raken met zijn lieflijke melodieën.

Caleb Landry Jones doet wat betreft weirdo-pop ook een baroque duit in het zakje. Ook 2 oudbekenden: Rockers Protomartyr en hiphop-fenomeen JPEGMAFIA zijn ook weer van de partij, beide met top-singles.

Naast Rusland nog een mini wereldreisje binnen de nieuwkomers. Wat berekend gitaargeweld uit Griekenland (Kooba Tercu), Folk uit Chili (Diego Lorenzini), geslepen elektronische gekkigheid uit Venezuela (arca) en een cover met James Bond-inspiraties uit Brazil (Elza Soares)

Big Thief komt direct hoog binnen met Love in Mine, een nummer dat nog dateert van de sessies van Two Hands. Mooi lieftallig liedje dat niet moet onderdoen voor de rest van het album.
Ook helemaal verslingerd geraakt aan de catchy Scandinavische synthpop van Moyka (dank aan AstroStart) en de Colombiaanse kleurrijke muziek van Lido Pimienta.
Eve Owen zit al aan de laatste single van haar debuut dat volgende week verschijnt en Mother is mijn favoriet tot nu. Opnieuw geproduced door Aaron Dessner en heeft een fraaie outro.
Fenne Lily heeft met To Be A Woman een opvolger klaar voor Hypochondriac dat al weken in mijn lijst staat, wat opvalt zijn de plotse gitaaruitbarstingen in dit nummer.

Gebeurt niet vaak dat een artiest uit mijn Afrekening overlijdt, de meesten zitten dan ook nog ver van de pensioengerechtigde leeftijd. Deze week ontviel ons dan Tony Allen, vanaf de jaren '60 drummer bij Fela Kuti en dus tot diep in de 21ste eeuw actief gebleven met toffe muziek. Dit jaar is er geen week voorbij gegaan dat ik niet naar zijn muziek heb geluisterd volgens mij. Ben blij hem nog live te hebben gezien en We've Landed mag hier nog even blijven. R.I.P. Tony Allen.

▸ Ed O'Brien's Shangri-La was al prima, maar Olympik is nog een tandje beter. Doet erg denken aan U2's 90's flirts met dancemuziek, ten tijde van Zooropa en Pop.
▸ Lido Pimienta's Nada haalde het bij mij net niet, maar de opvolger wel. Mooie mix tussen elektronica en traditionele Colombiaanse muziek. En ook een goede stem en fijne blazers.
▸ Benjamin Biolay heb ik ooit ontdekt toen 'ie opstond in een Franse platenzaak, om me er vervolgens echter nooit echt in te verdiepen. Dit stemmige nummer over een break-up raakte me echter wel de afgelopen tijd en het tussenstuk met piano is ook erg mooi.
▸ Michelle Blades is al gelijk een ontdekking via de nieuwe maandronde in de Song van het Jaar competitie. Heerlijke garage pop van deze Mexicaans-Panamese woonachtig in Parijs.
▸ Khruangbin scoort met een lekkere dansbaar funk-nummer met dub-effecten. Doet wel wat aan Peaking Lights oude stijl denken, maar dan iets sneller.
▸ Hayley Williams heb ik lang genegeerd, omdat ze in Paramore zat en dat vond ik wat te kinderachtig. Maar haar solowerk blijkt toch wel een stuk rijker aan diepgang dan verwacht. Dit nummer blijft al een lange tijd boeien, ben eigenlijk wel benieuwd geworden naar haar solo-album.

Ah, de laatste ex van Vanessa Paradis Speelde en tourde ook mee op haar Love Songs album/tournee.
edit: hoewel, in 2015 uit elkaar gegaan en Vanessa is allang weer bij een ander. Ok dan is het nog steeds de laatste ex want haar huidige man is (nog) geen ex.
